Sun July 14- Whale Watching

Another 4 species day!   We headed out to escape from the heat and found our first whales (2 small humpbacks) shortly after we passed the Montauk Lighthouse. We were able to spend some time with one that was flipper slapping and rolling over quite a lot. It was swimming, diving, and feeding in shallow water that was filled from surface to the bottom with Atlantic menhaden (AKA bunker). We eventually left this whale and headed further out. We came across a massive aggregation of 400-500 short-beaked common dolphins. They were everywhere we looked and often groups came to ride our bow wake.  The passengers at the bow were able to look down and see and HEAR the dolphins vocalizing! The joy on people’s faces said it all! What a beautiful encounter.  Later we briefly  encountered a group of bottlenose…

Mon July 15 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies and Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports some very good conditions today fishing on the Viking Starship. Although the Porgies seemed to be on the smaller side of the sizes we’ve been seeing lately, we had lots of action all around the boat with non-stop Porgies from start to finish. After loading up early this morning we found some time to venture off towards Block Island and found a nice pile of SeaBass. We had some really quality fish coming over the rail, up to 4 lbs. We did have a couple keeper Fluke and Mackerell off to the east. The pool winner today went to Mr. Lee from NY with a 3 lb Porgy. We will be sailing again tomorrow for our 5am Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies and SeaBass!

Mon July 15 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Carl reports an awesome morning of Half Day Family Fun Fishing! We caught tons of Big Black Sea Bass, several KEEPER Fluke, and a healthy dose of Porgies as well! Everyone onboard went home with bags of fresh fish for dinner (and some!). The first prize pool winner went to Jessica Mikihsch from Holtsville, NY with a 3.3 lb Fluke.

Sun July 14 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies and Sea Bass

Captain Dave reports a solid day of fishing. The trip started with some great action, catching several mixed-sized porgies. All the fishermen went home with some porgy today. Later in the day, the crew found lots of sea bass. Today’s pool winner was Neptali Ttasporte from NJ, with a 2.6-pound porgy. Today’s edible pool winner was Kurdis from NY with a 3.8-pound sea bass. The fishing keeps getting better!

Sat July 13 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt Mike reports once again we saw steady action all trip on the Viking Star. The Sea Bass and Porgy bite was excellent. The Fluke bite was a little slow, but there was  a very hefty one in the bucket. Fun afternoon on the water! The pool winner was Ron Alma from Montauk, NY with…

Sat July 13 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Sea Bass

Captain Dave reports an excellent day of fishing on the Montauk Point. The trip had a great start, fishing close to the lighthouse. Fri July 12 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt Mike reports a tougher trip this afternoon. The weather conditions for our PM portion of our half-day fishing today was unfavorable with the strong wind. However, we still managed some nice keeper Fluke and Porgies in the buckets! The pool winner this afternoon went to Christian Baldaeas from Lindenhurst, NY with a 3.8 lb Fluke.
