Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Thurs Aug 22 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a very good day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. We had good fishing right from the get-go as we made our first anchor drop that lasted for about 2 hours or a nice steady pick of Porgies and a few SeaBass. We had mixed sized fish around medium and large size. Once the tide started running we worked our way to the south of the lighthouse and found some really nice size Porgies to pick on. We finished off our trip towards the east and found a good pile of SeaBass with about a half a dozen keeper Fluke mixed in along with a few Blue fish. The pool winner today went to James Nicholson from Brooklyn with a 2.8 lb Porgy. We are definitely sailing again tomorrow on our 5am Jumbo Porgies and SeaBass,…

Capt Mike reports an okay trip on the Viking Star. Wind and tide were not in our favor this afternoon. Fishing picked up towards the end of the trip with nice Porgies and Sea Bass in the buckets. The pool winner was Shane Grad from Chicago, IL with a 3 lb Sea Bass.

Wed Aug 21 – Full Day Block Island Fluke & Sea Bass

Capt JR reports a pretty good day on the Viking Starlite. The Sea Bass fishing was once again as good as it gets with everyone easily getting their limit of big beautiful knot heads. However, the Fluke bite was definitely way off. Maybe they need some time to recover after the giant ground swell the…

Wed Aug 21 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Sea Bass

Captain Dave reports another great day of fishing—although a bit windy, the conditions were almost perfect.  The trip was off to a great start anchored near the lighthouse with a great picking of mix-sized porgies, with a handful of nice large ones. Later, the trip headed towards Block Island, where they caught several nice-sized sea bass. Our pool winner was Danny Ko from Queens, NY, with a two 1/2-pound porgy today.

Wed Aug 21 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Captain Mike Ricker reports that despite the windy conditions, our crew still found a few places to drift with good numbers of jumbo porgies and giant sea bass. We had many short flukes towards the end and a couple of keepers. Our pool winner today was Maris Perez from East Northport, NY, with a 4-pound…

Mon Aug 19 – Whale Watching

Once again, we headed out to the area where we have been seeing whales for several weeks. We found them again! 10-12 humpback whales, including moms and calves. While we are still working on identifying some of the humpbacks, we found several that we’ve seen since early July. On this trip, the calves and moms were often breaching, flipper slapping, chin slapping. All of those behaviors serve many purposes, but predominately, are used to send non-vocal communication. Another great trip on the ocean, with about 1 minute of light rain.  We now have approximately 117 identified humpback whales off Montauk this summer.  Our best season ever, and the best anyone can remember since 1987. Join us!  All pertinent laws and guidelines were followed. Photos were taken from a distance using a telephoto lens. Some photos have been cropped Photos will…

Mon Aug 19 – Full Moon Striped Bass

Capt Carl reports that the Blue Super Moon provided us some hungry Super-Sized Striped Bass and Gorilla Blues! They bit well for the entire trip and kept all our anglers busy. The pool winner was Albert Osterman from Yonkers, NY with a 13 lb Bluefish.

Mon Aug 19 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Captain Carl reports plenty of rod bending action and fun this afternoon on the Viking Starlite! Our awesome anglers enjoyed catching fish all afternoon with plenty of porgies and sea bass making it into their buckets! The Fluke bite was definitely still off, but everyone had a good time and fresh fish to go home…

Mon Aug 19 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a pretty decent day of fishing on the Viking Starship. We ran offshore first thing this morning to get out of the dirty water that the tropical storm brought in and we had a slow and steady pick of both Porgies and SeaBass. They were not as big as they were yesterday…

Mon Aug 19 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Carl reports an OK morning trip on the Viking Starlite. It started off a little slow with the left over ground swell from Hurricane Ernesto, but by the trips end, conditions improved as well as the fishing. Everyone went home with Sea Bass and Porgies! We did have some Flukes as well, but no…
