Wed Oct 16- Block Island Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports that they started the day tied up close to the Island and had a good pick of nice sized Sea Bass and Porgies on the Viking Starship. When the tide started to run too fast we headed offshore to a spot we haven’t fished all year. The results were great! We caught plenty of nice size Porgies and some great Sea Bass as well as 4 Cod and some Bluefish. The pool winner was Michael Morgan with a 3lb Porgy.
Tues Oct 15 – Block Island Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass
Captain Dave reports a fair to good day fishing on the Viking Starship. We started drifting inshore of Block Island with almost perfect conditions- long slow drift in an easy tide. We had a steady pick, but no Jumbo Porgies today. Things got rough with the wind against the tide and we moved offshore. As the day progressed the seas were calm and sun strong. Offshore we had a slow pick of Porgies, Sea Bass and 8-10 Cod. The Cod were green; a good sign for the upcoming trips at the Viking Fleet that will focus on Block Island Cod and Sea Bass. The Dogfish were present offshore, but not as bad as a couple of days ago. First place in the pool was a tie between Robert Lisica and Dwayne Sherard with 3.3 pound Scup. Second place went to…
Mon Oct 14- Block Island Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass
Captain Dave reports a mixed day of fishing today aboard the Viking Starship. After getting to Block Island, we decided to stay inshore to avoid the voracious Dogfish that made the Porgy catching difficult yesterday. We had a slow but steady pick of medium to large Porgy. Initially we had to pick through a lot of short Sea Bass, but once the tide turned, the conditions improved. The fishing today required a little more patience than our regular anglers are accustomed to, but by the end of the day we were able to put together a good catch. First place in the pool went to Egbert Bangari of the Bronx, NY with a 3.1 pound Scup. Second place went to Rick Ebanks with a 5.2 pound Sea Bass.
Mon Oct 14- 1/2 Day Fishing AM
Capt Dave G reports a very good morning of fishing aboard the Viking Star. We had nice conditions and caught a load of Porgies and nice sized Sea Bass. It was a great ending to a great Half Day Season. Capt Dave, First Mate Steve and the rest of the Viking Crew thank all our passengers who came fishing with us this year, and we look forward to seeing everyone next year.
Sun Oct 13 – Full Moon Striped Bass Fishing
Capt Carl reports an improvement on our Full Moon Night Bass Trip, on the Viking Starship though it was a slow night overall. We caught a few keeper Striped Bass early on in the trip, but eventually they stopped biting. We tried looking around in a bunch of different areas, including Block Island, but only found a few giant Sea Bass. Ray Kircher from Patchogue, NY took the pool with a 12 pound Striped Bass.
Sun Oct 13 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM
Capt Dave G reports a good afternoon of fishing aboard the Viking Star. We had beautiful conditions for the afternoon and the fish were biting. We ended up with a nice catch of Porgies and some jumbo Sea Bass. The pool winner was Vinnie Librizzo of Commack NY with a 4.25 pound Sea Bass. Congratulations Vinnie, first time angler with the Viking Fleet and pool winner.
Sun Oct 13 – Block Island Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass
Captain Dave reports a challenging but ultimately rewarding day on the Viking Starship. We did manage some Porgies but every time we got onto the Porgy bite we were bedeviled by the Dogfish and had to move. The Dogfish were the major problem today. Anglers did pick up some nice Sea Bass, but the best was yet to come. We managed to get some lovely Pollock, 7-8 Cod in the 7-12 pound range and a few Bluefish. The first place pool winner was Anthony Bennett from Bristol PA with a 2.7 pound Scup. Second place in the pool went to Dennis Harrington from Miller Place NY with a 12 pound Cod.
Sun Oct 13 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM
Capt Dave G reports a good morning of fishing aboard the Viking Star. We had breezy conditions and the bite started a bit on the slow side. Then the fish started to bite. We ended up with a nice catch of Porgies along with some nice Sea Bass and a couple Bluefish. The pool winner was Kevin Kilpatrick of College Point NY with a 3.25 pound Sea Bass.
Sat Oct 12 – Striped Bass Fishing
Capt Carl reports a tough go on the Night boat tonight. After the last 3 days of 50+ knots of wind and 15 ft swells, the water was very dirty close to home where we started and we had no bites. We ventured off closer to Block Island and we did have some action and bites with gorilla blues, and a few Sea Bass, but no striped Bass for the night. We are looking forward to some cleaner conditions for our Full Moon Trip Sunday night! Fran Vivo from Whitestone, NY took the pool with a hefty 17 lb Bluefish.
Sat Oct 12 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM
Capt Dave G reports that fishing was okay on the Viking Star this afternoon on our first trip out since the big storm. It was pretty breezy when we started fishing, but the wind laid down a bit as the afternoon went on. We ended up catching a bunch of Porgies and also some nice sized Sea Bass. The pool winner was Justin Forsberg from the Bronx, NY with a 3.25 lb Sea Bass.
Tue Oct 8 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass
Capt Dave reports very good fishing on the Viking Starship. Inshore by Block Island was great with mostly Large and Jumbo Porgies and some SeaBass mixed in. Once everyone had their fill of Porgies we went offshore to find the SeaBass. It was a good steady pick of very nice size SeaBass along with some medium size Porgies. There were also some Bluefish today and about a 1/2 dozen Trigger Fish that were the biggest we have seen this season. The first place pool winner was Benny Niranjen with a monster 3.4 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Pete SeaBrook from Kings Park, NY with a 4.2 lb Jumbo SeaBass. Unfortunately the 5am Block Island Porgy & SeaBass trip is cancelled for Wednesday Oct 9, Thursday Oct 10 and Friday Oct 11 due to the weather. We will hopefully…
Mon Oct 7 -BLock Island Fall Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass
Captain Dave reports a fair trip today on the Viking Starship. We layed up close to Block Island this morning and had a nice mixed bag of Porgies and Sea Bass. Once the ebb started conditions got too rough to drift so we traveled to the East and had a good pick of nice Scup. We had to pick through a lot of shorts to put together some nice big Sea Bass offshore. All our anglers went home with plenty of fish; we just had to work a little harder today. First place in the pool went to Harold Bussey with a 3.2 pound Porgy. photos to follow…………………….
