Fri Aug 16 – Whale Watching- Star
The whales are still around!!
We headed out with a full boat of passengers and crew. The visibility was excellent once we were a bit offshore, although all was hazy due to the Canadian Wildfire smoke. We found our first whales off in the distance via looking for blows and seeing multiple breaches ahead of us.
We first found Apex, a 45/46 year old humpback we’d seen in 2022 with a calf, and again last year, as in this year, with no calf. As on other trips, we saw a mix of behaviors, from all whales including repeated breaches an flipper slapping, lob-tailing, inverted lob-tailing, chin slaps, logging, and of course various dives from non-fluking to high fluking.
Including this trip, we have identified 115 different humpbacks off Montauk this summer. While many have stayed around, new ones are showing up as well. We even saw some of the July Montauk humpbacks whales during our 36-hour overnight trip to the waters off Chatham, MA.
Our trips are filling up – so get your tickets right away!
