Sat Sept 7 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports a pretty good day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. We started our morning in one of our usual spots down the beach and didn’t have as much action as we’ve been seeing so we moved offshore after a short while. Once we got into that midway spot between Block Island…
Sat Sept 7- 1/2 Day Fishing AM
Captain Carl reports a FINE morning of 1/2 Day fishing aboard the Viking Star! Despite the easterly ground swell and light NE wind, the fish were snapping! The Fluke bite was very good, with many KEEPER Fluke making it into the buckets mixed in with some Big Black Sea Bass and a smattering of Porgies!…
Fri Sept 6 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports a much improved day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. We started off this morning just south of the lighthouse and had a good bite, but the rougher conditions made for difficult fishing. We had lots of actions with medium sized Porgies, but ended up making our move halfway to Block Island and got into some calmer water and got into some really good fishing. We anchored up here for a couple hours and the bite here was great with some larger sized Porgies and we even boated a 6 lb Fluke. After getting a nice pick of Porgies we worked farther offshore to target some SeaBass and once again had to pick our way through a lot of little stuff to get some keepers. We also saw some little Blue fish around here. The pool…
Wed Sept 4- Whale Watching- Starship
Whales nearshore and offshore. Our incredible season continues! What a day we had. The seas were flat, sun was bright, and the temperatures were comfortably cool. Our 1st humpback, named Chive, who we’d not seen in 2 years was breached within about 60 feet of our bow and was within 5 miles of…
Sun Sept 1- Whale Watching- Starship
Another Sunday on the ocean with lots of whales! We keep finding whales! Sunday, September 1, 2024 was no exception. The weather was a bit cloudy but we had a full vessel, and we headed out. Early on, shortly after we pass by the lighthouse we encountered a small group of Tamenend’s bottlenose dolphins….
Mon Sept 2 to Thurs Sept 5 – 3 Day TNT Ultra LTD
Mon Sept 2 to Thurs Sept 5 – 3 Day TNT Ultra LTD Captain JR reports a very successful 3 day TNT trip on the Viking Star. We got a late start on day one with some very inconvenient NE breeze keeping us concentrated on the tunas for most of the day. But we made…
Thurs Sept 5 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports a pretty good day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. This mornings bite started off ok, with some decent mixed action of Porgies and SeaBass, most the fish were on the medium side. As the bite dropped off we made a move midway between the point and Block and had pretty much the same go, with mixed Porgies and SeaBass, nothing very big, but some decent fish. We worked this area for a bit till the tide came in and we made our move closer to Block Island. Here we kind of had mixed bag pick between keeper Fluke, Blue fish, Mackerell, Sea Bass, and Porgies. Action was ok, getting everyone pretty much what they needed to get close to their limit. The pool winner today went to Levi Hayes from Brooklyn, NY with a 2.6…
Wed Sept 4 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports an excellent day on the Viking Starship. We started out anchored east of the lighthouse fishing the rock piles. Fishing for Porgies was as good as it gets with double and triple headers! Once the tide started running fishing slowed down on the anchor, so we put in a couple drifts but it wasn’t great. We headed offshore for Sea Bass and anchored up. There were tons of little ones, but everyone managed a few nice ones. There were also some Porgies in the mix there. There were also a couple of Fluke by the lighthouse. The pool winner was Damian Palmer from Amityville, NY with a 2 1/2 lb Porgy.
Tue Sept 3 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports a good trip on the Viking Starship. We started out the trip way to the west. Fishing was really good to start with big Porgies & Sea Bass. It slowed down eventually, so we went a bit east. There were mixed size Porgies there. We tried offshore in the deeper water and had a mix of Sea Bass and Porgies. We had mostly nice stuff. It was our best drop with quality fish with some 4 to 4 1/2 lb Sea Bass. There were also some Fluke and Bluefish. The pool winner was Justin Cruz from Plesantville, NJ with a 3 lb Porgy. We are definitely sailing tomorrow at 5AM!
Sun Sept 1 – Whale Watching
Another Sunday on the ocean with lots of whales! We keep finding whales! Sunday, September 1, 2024 was no exception. The weather was a bit cloudy but we had a full vessel, and we headed out. Early on, shortly after we pass by the lighthouse we encountered a small group of Tamenend’s bottlenose dolphins. We stayed with these dolphins for a short while and then headed offshore. Regardless of the rain, and the seas, as we have done on all of our trips this year, we found humpback whales! Ultimately identifying 18 different individuals including some new ones and some of the moms and calves we’ve seen since early July. As I write this report, I’m still identifying individuals by looking at their flukes, and/or dorsal fin, and/or scars. It takes time to meticulously go through all of the photos…
