Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Montauk

Sat Aug 23 – Whale Watching

We headed out after the effects of Hurricane Erin were settling down. Often after these kinds of events, we are sure what might become of the whales’ prey and the whales. We decided to head towards where we had been finding whales over the past few weeks. We were pleasantly surprised by finding whales significantly closer than we expected. At first we saw the characteristic towering blows of finback whales, a mom and her calf. After a while, we headed towards a nearby pair of humpback whales, also a mom and her calf. In both cases always a special treat to see. The humpbacks could be seen open-mouth feeding and filtering – again, always a pleasure to see, whether you’re a newbie or have been at it for nearly 4 decades. We ended the trip while looking at our 5th…

Sun Aug 24 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Captain Mike reported that the trip started off a bit slow, but the action picked up and turned into steady rod-bending fun right through to the end. The fluke bite turned on later in the day, with Seabass, Porgies, and a few nice Fluke filling the buckets. All in all, a great afternoon on the…

Sun Aug 24 – Full Day Jumbo Fluke & Knothead Sea Bass

Captain JR reports a tough day on the Viking Starlite. The fish at Block Island were definitely still feeling the effects of the giant seas from the passing storm. We found some Sea Bass and giant Block Island scup so everyone had enough for a good dinner. But the Fluke were totally turned off… Another…

Sun Aug 24 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Captain Dave reports fishing conditions that were 1000% better than yesterday. We started off by the Lighthouse where we caught a nice mix of Porgies, Bluefish, and Sea Bass. A little further out we were able to find a Jumbo Porgy hotspot. We had mostly large fish today. Congratulations to our pool winner, Abel Najera…

Sat Aug 23 – New Moon Striped Bass Fishing

Captain JR reports the Saturday night striped bass and blue fish trip started out with a bang! Loads of big blues and a couple striped bass kept everyone very busy early in the trip. The action definitely slowed down after sunset, but we had loads of fun for the first couple hours. The pool winner…

Sat Aug 23 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt. Mike reports that conditions were not ideal beginning of the trip.  The wind tapered off and rods started bending!  We had steady action the last half of the afternoon with Seabass, Porgies and a few Fluke in the buckets! Ended up being a nice afternoon on the water. The pool winner was John Concannon…

Sat Aug 23 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a harder day than usual on the Viking Starship. We had to look around a lot because of the water quality after Hurricane Erin, which was to be expected. We got in a few drifts, but is was pretty picky. We expect much improvement tomorrow. The first place pool winner was Anderson John with a 3.8 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Carlos Olayzola with a 7 lb Weakfish.

Sat Aug 23 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Mike reports a pretty steady mixed bag pick all morning on the Viking Star. The Sea Bass were hungry after Hurricane Erin went through. We managed some nice Sea Bass and Porgies in the buckets. It was a nice morning on the water! The pool winner was Geoffrey Katz from Queens, NY wit a…

Wed Aug 20 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Mike reports a decent trip on the Viking Star. The morning drift started with steady action and a good Sea Bass bite.  Things then slowed down until the end of the morning. We did manage one very large Fluke at the end of the trip. 1/2 Day trips are cancelled for this afternoon and…
