28 Hour Tile/Hake-Viking Star Captain Steven Sr reports that the 2016 Offshore Season has started off with a huge success! Tile, Wreck Fish, Barrel and Hake!! On the 28 hour trip we hit a few wrecks in the beginning, then did some open bottom fishing and finished up on a wreck. All of which were very productive. We had tile to 35.2 lbs, about a dozen extremely large barrel to 30.1 lbs, three big wreck fish to 28 lbs and a lot of hake to 30 lbs. A dozen or so of the tile were over the 25 lb mark. The STAR of the trip was 9 year old Ricky Morel who refused to hand over the reel and fished from the first to last drop! His largest fish was a 24.7 lb tile. He also had double header tile…

Wednesday March 9

Local Cod Capt Carl reports a fair day of cod fishing on the Viking Star. We had nice weather and drifted all day, with some drifts producing some good shots of green Cods, keepers and shorts, and we saw some double headers as well with some gaffers in the mix! Some drifts were slower, and some were good. We picked away all day and ended up with a fair catch, with a few anglers managing only 1 keeper, and most others 4 with or 5 keeper Cods. High hook had 7. Joseph Leesang of Brooklyn, NY took the pool with a 13 pounder, and Ziggy Sudeaski from Riverhead, NY took second with a 12 pounder.

The second place pool winner was Marek Lisowiec from Lindenhurst, NY. Unfortunately we are cancelled for tomorrow, but the forecast is looking good for the rest of the week.

Mon Feb 22

Local Cod-Viking Starship Capt Carl reports just an OK day on the cod grounds. We sailed with a light load of anglers and the weather was as nice as it gets! Flat seas, no wind, sunshine and warm temps! We had a good morning bite of market cod while drifting around, and the Marvelous Mavros again caught a nice 15 lb cod mixed with the smaller ones. For a couple hours we picked away at keeper cod, as well as short cods. Eventually, the bite turned off, and we tried some other zones but nothing materialized for us, making the second half of the trip a slow one. John Cavallo from New Hyde Park, NY took the pool with an 8 lb cod. We will not be sailing tomorrow, but check back for schedule updates.

Mon Feb 15

Viking Star – Private Charter Capt Carl reports a pretty good day on the Viking Star with Mike and the “Jersey Boys” annual charter. Seas were flat calm and the wind was light, so we drifted all day and some drifts were good and some were not. We saw quite a few short cod, but plenty of keepers mixed in to make some nice bags of fillets. We saw a bunch of double headers also! Most fish were small market size, but we did have some gaffers as well, with the biggest cod around 12 lbs. All in all we put a fine catch together for a winter day.  There was also tons and tons of bait around. It looks like the next nice day will be Friday, and possibly Thursday as well, but we will keep an eye on…
