Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Montauk

Saturday Feb 1

Local Cod Captain Carl is happy to report a nice day of winter cod fishing! Winds were light and variable all day, seas were calm, temperature was warm (for February) and fishing was decent too. We had a few short cod and some ling come up in the dark, then once the sun came up we saw a couple of steady drifts with some keeper cods and more ling. We picked away for a little bit but then things went slow, so we searched around some different areas and found a shot of cod here and a shot of cod there. In the afternoon the bite picked up quite a bit for a little while and we saw some nicer size cod as well as quite a few pollack. Jigs and bait both produced today and as always, some fishermen…

Montauk Local Cod Captain Steven Jr. reports a challenging day on the Cod grounds.  We picked a few cod, ling and cunners on every drop but could never get it going beyond a few here and there for all species.  Andy Lee took the pool with an 11 pounder and Matt Chmil took 2nd place.  Matt was also high hook with three cod.

Wednesday January 15

Local Cod Captain Steven Jr reports a very tough day of cod fishing today. Despite the nice weather, there was still a large ground swell that gave all the bottom fish lockjaw. We covered a lot of area, but we were only able to find the odd cod here and there. The weather looks good for the upcoming weekend and hopefully the fishing picks up after the swell . We have trips on both the Viking Starship and Viking FiveStar, please call the office at 631-668-5700 to reserve your spot!

Friday January 10

Montauk Local  Cod Captain Ant reports an overall okay day on the winter grounds.  You had to work for it today as the cod bite was a lot more tentative than we’ve seen of late which could have been caused by the 4 degree water temp drop over the last 3 days.  We started drifting open bottom in the dark finding a ferocious jumbo Ling bite.  We didn’t see our first Cod until first light and had a few decent drifts early producing 15-20 Cod a drift.  Then someone opened the dog pound, and at a slow .3 knot drift, the doggies found us and followed.   To avoid the assault we short drifted and chipped away pretty much all day.  We never really found any big piles of fish, they seemed to be scattered smaller piles, when we went…

Sunday January 5

Local Cod Captain Steven Jr. reports a decent day on the cod grounds, not as good as last weekend, but at the end of the day anglers had nice bags of Cod, Ling and giant Cunner fillets.  We anchored up just as the first light was on the horizon and began to pick right away all around the boat.  Keeper and short cod and nice size ling and as it got lighter out it seemed to pick up a bit.  Then the anchor pulled as there was still a bit of leftover swell from the storm.  We reset but it seemed to shut down.  We moved on and began drifting.  We had a pick…everywhere we went the rest of the day.  We’d run over a pile, catch 10-15 nice cod, then 10 minutes of nothing, then hit a pile and…
