Tue Aug 25 – Whale Watching
Saturday August 22, 2020 5 Humpbacks and about 60 Common Bottlenose dolphins Today’s trip couldn’t have started out better, with a humpback whale in Block Island Sound before we even made it to the ocean! This was a small humpback, about 24 feet (7.3 meters), probably less than 1 year old, by itself about 1 nautical mile NNW of Montauk Point. We stayed with this whale for a short while and then headed out to find others. It wasn’t long before we found Nile’s 2016 calf again. We stayed with this 4 year old male for some time and were able to get additional photos documenting his injuries. As we did a few days ago, we shared these photos with the Center for Coastal Studies Animal Entanglement Response (MAER) personnel and others and are glad to hear that his wounds are healing…
Mon Aug 24 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM
Capt JR reports a great day on the Viking Star. There was a lot of action with a mixed bag of Fluke, SeaBass and Porgies. The pool winner was Pete Carroll from Staten Island, NY with a 7.5 lb Fluke!
Mon Aug 24 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports another excellent day of fishing on the Viking Starship. Our very first drift lasted for over 2 hours and we caught all the Jumbo Porgies we needed. Sea Bass fishing had a slower start with a lot of smaller ones and Porgies mixed in. We kept at it and almost everyone got their limit on nice Sea Bass. Also landed today were a 1/2 dozen keeper Fluke and a handful of Bluefish. Today’s pool winner was Marl Lepik who caught a 2.8lb Porgy.
Mon Aug 24 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM
Capt JR reports a great trip on the Viking Star. We mostly had Sea Bass and Fluke coming up. We also had a good sprinkling of quality Porgies in the mix. Great action all trip long. Teddy Angelides was our first place pool winner from Mclean, VA with a 6 lb Fluke.
Sun Aug 23- 1/2 Day Fishing PM
Capt Jr reports a great afternoon of catching on the Viking Star. We caught loads of SeaBass and Fluke all afternoon. We also had some quality Porgies in the mix. Everyone had big filet bags to go home with. The pool winner was Douglas Cohen from Glen Cove, NY, with a 4.5 lb Fluke. The edible pool winner was Robert Wooding from Amagansett, NY, with a 4.3 lb Trigger Fish.
Sun Aug 23 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports an excellent day fishing on the Viking Starship. We started with a long drift of over 2 1/2 hours in near perfect conditions. Mostly large Porgies with a few Sea Bass in the mix. After that long drift, most of our anglers had caught their limit of Scup and we traveled off to the East to hunt for some quality Sea Bass. Lots of action, quite a few shorts had to go back over the rail, but it wasn’t long before our anglers had their limit of Sea Bass up to 4.6 lbs in. First place in the pool went to Chris Conway of Far Rockaway, NY with a 3 lb Porgy. Edible pool went to Jose Hernandez of the Bronx with a 4.6 lb Sea Bass.
Sun Aug 23 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM
Capt Jr reports a great trip this morning with non stop action.The anglers caught tons of SeaBass, Porgies, and Fluke from start to finish. Everyone went home with nice bags of meat. The pool winner was Paul Breslin from Montauk, NY, with a 7 lb Fluke. The edible pool winner was Max Sabatini from Montauk, NY, with a 5.5 lb Fluke.
Sat Aug 22- 1/2 Day Fishing PM
Capt Dave G reports a good afternoon of fishing aboard the Viking Star. We again had a load of Porgies and SeaBass along with some nice sized keeper Fluke. The pool winner was A.J. Thompson from Rye, NY, with a beautiful 9 lb Fluke.
Sat Aug 22 – LTD Passenger – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass
Capt Stephen D reports a great day on the Viking Starlite. We started out at the lighthouse at the end of the ebb with slack water. The Porgies bit very well. We also got in two drifts at the beginning of the flood. The Porgies bit like mad and we had a few SeaBass as well. We headed towards Block Island for some SeaBass. We got in two long drifts and it was slammer! The pool winner was Oscar Miguel from Corona, Queens with a 2.75 lb Porgy.
Sat Aug 22 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass
Capt Dave reports an excellent day on the Viking Starship. Fishing was great by the lighthouse with excellent drifting conditions. We mostly had large Porgies with some mediums mixed in. We headed to the east for SeaBass where it was tougher than it has been. We saw smaller SeaBass than usual, so anglers had to pick through them, but most got their limit up to 4 lbs. There were also a couple of keeper Fluke. The pool winner was Dwayne John from Staten Island, NY with a 3 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Ermina White from Brooklyn, NY with 4 lb SeaBass.
