Tue Aug 18 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports an excellent day on the Viking Starship. We started out down the beach to get out of the tide. It was a slow steady pick while we were anchored with large to medium Porgies. After that we headed east and anchored on rock piles. There were some SeaBass, then the Porgies took over. Great action! We headed further east and drifted over some open bottom where it was excellent. This spot made the day with a mixed bag of SeaBass, Porgies, Triggerfish and Mackerel. The first place pool winnet was Michael Morris from Brooklyn, NY with a 3 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Jose Rodriguez from Flushing, Queens with a 3 1/2  lb Triggerfish.

Mon Aug 17 – Whale Watching

3 Humpbacks and about 300 NW Atlantic Norther Migratory Common Bottlenose Dolphins Wednesday August 12, 2020 WOW what a trip! We had reports of whales around they Midway Buoy and within an hour we found out first whale, a humpback we hadn’t seen before. A short while after staying with this whale, we came upon our first groups of NW Atlantic Norther Migratory (AKA “In-shore”) Common Bottlenose Dolphins. At least 3 groups interacting and seemingly driving massive groups of prey.  The groups dolphins would work together, with some driving forward and others turning to produce vortex-like field which formed a large circular slick.  The dolphins would converge and chaos would occur. Our second groups of dolphins, over 180 of them joined in the fray. Were they feeding? We never saw them with prey in their mouths? We they mating? This…

Mon Aug 17 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt Dave reports a lot of action on the Viking Star. We avoided around the lighthouse due to the leftover conditions from the storm, but there was plenty of life off to the east. Everyone was busy catching Porgy and SeaBass this afternoon. We had quite a few short Fluke, but no keepers. The first place pool winner was Christian Capano from Yonkers, NY with a 5 lb Bluefish. The edible pool winner was Peter Yeung from Stanford, CT with a 3 lb Porgy.

Sun Aug 16 – Montauk Jumbo Lighthouse Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports tough conditions on the Viking Starship. Rough seas and rain made for a very challenging day of fishing. We started out anchored up down the beach and had a steady pick of medium to large Porgies, no Jumbos today. We then ventured to a wreck offshore hoping for some of the quality Sea Bass we’ve been seeing. Anglers were able to bring aboard a handful of keeper Sea Bass, a lot of shorts went back. There were a lot of Porgies on the wreck today which is kind of unusual. The fishing deteriorated as the day progressed. Most of our anglers were able to put together a good catch, but it wasn’t an easy day of fishing. Improving conditions later this week should improve the bite. Charles Duhaney from the Bronx, NY won the first place pool…

Sat Aug 15 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports excellent fishing despite the rough conditions. We started out by the lighthouse where we caught mostly medium to large size Porgies and Seabass. We went offshore of Montauk to anchor up and do some Seabassing. The fishing over there was good, we had to pick through a lot of little ones, but everyone ended up with their limit. The pool winner was Shmell Dupre from Brooklyn, NY with a 2.25 lb SeaBass. The edible pool winner was John Williams from Amityville, NY with a 3 lb SeaBass.
