Mon July 20 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt JR reports that this afternoon’s trip was action packed from start to finish. The first half of the trip anglers boated some real nice Sea Bass. The second half hungry Porgies were flying over the rail. The first place pool winner was Eddy Kay with a Fluke just keeper size. The edible pool winner was Patricia Subtil with a 4 lb SeaBass

Mon July 20- Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports a really good day of fishing. The first drift of the day by the lighthouse saw too much tide, it did produce some nice sized fish but we headed way down the beach to get away from the strong tides. We then caught very well, landing some mixed size Porgies as well as some big Sea Bass. We also caught Mackerel, Bluefish and Trigger fish. We headed offshore for the last drift where mostly everyone limited out on Sea Bass and Porgies. Today’s pool winner was Anthony Roman of NY who landed a 2.8lb Porgy.

Mon July 20 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Captain JR Gibson reports that we had a good trip this morning with Sea Bass and Porgies being the predominant catch. They were coming over the rail at a steady pace. We also Captured a beautiful trophy fluke about 5 lbs. Today’s pool winner is Dan Smith from West Islip with a 7.5 lbs fluke.

Sun July 19 – Magic Hour Sunset Mixed Bag

Capt JR reports that last night’s Magic Hour yielded an abundance of Porgies with some real nice Sea Bass on the jigs. We also had a few Stripers and Blues as well. Action was consistent throughout the trip.

Sun July 19 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports another very productive day fishing on the Viking Starship. We started the morning anchoring up, where the anglers were kept busy with a steady pick of medium-sized Scup. We decided to do a couple of drifts farther offshore to pick up some Sea Bass. We picked through some smaller fish but there were a lot of quality 3-4 pound Sea Bass to be had. Towards the end of the trip we decided to do another drift near the lighthouse where we had a steady pick of large and jumbo Porgies. A great way to end the trip. First prize in the pool today went to Wilfredo Nunez with a 3 lb  Porgy and the edible pool went to Delroy Ewing with a 4 lb Sea Bass.

Sun July 19 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt JR reports an okay day on the Viking Star. It wasn’t our best trip, or our worst trip. Everyone went home with some meat. We caught some Sea Bass and Porgies and had some keeper Fluke in the mix too. 5 Year old Brady Donohue from St. James, NY won the pool with a 5 lb Fluke. His brother Kevin caught some Jumbo Porgies too.

Sun July 19- Whale Watching Trip

4 humpback whales and massive schools of Atlantic menhaden (bunker). Great way to start the season! The Viking Fleet and CRESLI began our 24th consecutive season of whale watching trips just where we left off, i.e., finding whales. We had reports of whales that morning (seen from shore by our naturalist, Dr. Artie Kopelman, and heard in the fog aboard the Viking Starship that morning by the intrepid Viking Fleet mate, Joey Ferguson). We also had reports of dolphins west of town. Out we headed and within a short while we were past Montauk Light looking for cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises). Shortly thereafter a fog bank rolled in and we continued on and listened for blows. Eventually the fog lifted and we found ourselves in the midst of many massive schools of bunker. Here we encountered feeding humpback whales. Two…
