Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Mon Sept 5 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Carl reports a fine morning of half day fishing on the Viking Starlite. We caught lots of fish consisting mostly of Large Porgies, Sea Bass, and a few fluke to 7lbs! There was no pool today but everyone went home with fresh fish for dinner! There was no pool held on the boat today.

Mon Sept 5 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a great day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. We had a relatively light crowd this Labor Day which made for a great day to do some exploring and it was a Porgy “Bail Job”. We started off the morning anchored up on a nice rock pile east of the Lighthouse…

Sun Sept 4- Whale Watching

Another stellar trip with 5 humpback whales!!   This incredible season continues! We didn’t have to travel far from Montauk Lighthouse to find our first humpback.  This was Scylla’s 2016 calf again. The propeller scars and damaged dorsal are hard to look at, but the resilience of this animal is a testament to its will to survive. This 6 year old whale is just almost 40 feet (12.2m) long, and was feeding on the bottom periodically and after a while came to the surface and first, we saw a massive “tail-throw,” followed by multiple bouts of pectoral flipper-slapping, and rolling over, sometimes right next to us on the starboard side (our engines were out of gear, of course) and right under our bow.  Just amazing. A small private boat was nearby and appropriately remained motionless as this whale swam and…

Sun Sept 4 – 1/2 Fishing PM

Capt Carl reports more of the same rod bending action this afternoon with giant Porgies, Sea Bass, a few fluke, and numerous other species keeping our anglers busy all afternoon. Again, everyone went home with plenty of filets for dinner! The first place pool winner went to Malone Smith from East Quogue, NY with a 3.8 lb Sea Bass. The second place pool winner went Reese Smith from East Quogue as well with a 3.2 lb SeaBass. We did cancel the PM portion of tomorrows half day fishing (Monday September 5th) but we will be sailing for the 8 AM portion of the trip.

Sun Sept 4 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Carl reports an action packed BONANZA on the morning half day trip! Ross were bending all morning all around the boat with loads of Porgies, Sea Bass, Mackerel, and a few fluke sprinkled in as well. Everyone went home with some delicious fresh fish for dinner and memories to last a lifetime!  The first…

Sat Sept 3 – 1/2 Fishing PM

Capt Mike reports another nice day on the Viking Star. It was steady Porgy picking all day. We also caught a few jumbo Sea Bass and nice keeper Fluke later in the trip. There was no pool this afternoon.

Sat Sept 3 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports an excellent day on the Viking Starship. Montauk Porgy fishing continues to be EXCELLENT at the lighthouse. The Sea Bass fishing is still a bit tough to the east. We continue to pick through a bunch of smaller fish to get to the bigger ones, but everyone is managing a few keepers….

Sat Sept 3 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt JR reports an action packed trip this morning on the Viking Star. Giant tackle busting Porgies and Sea Bass made up most of our catch. A few Fluke coming over the rail as well. Lots of meat for fish dinners!!! The first place pool winner was Craig Harrigan from Larchmont, NY with a 3.2 lb Sea Bass. The second place pool winner was Gary Owen from Larchmont, NY with a 2.8 lb Sea Bass.

Fri Sept 2 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt Mike reports a beautiful afternoon spent fishing on the Viking Star for the half day fishing. The weather turned into a gorgeous day on the water with full buckets all around. Conditions where perfect at our spot for large quality Sea Bass, jumbo Porgies with a few keeper Fluke thrown in. The first place pool winner went to Mike McFeely from Rockville Centre with a 4.2 lb SeaBass.

Fri Sept 1 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt JR reports a more difficult morning of fishing on the Viking Star. The wind made for poor conditions with the boat rolling around, we tried to tuck away out of the wind the best we could, but it still was a rockier morning. We did manage to get a nice pick of Porgies, SeaBass…

Wed Aug 31- Whale Watch

Our successful trips continue: 2 humpback whales!   We headed out on a gorgeous day with unlimited visibility and clear skies. We weren’t far out at all when we encountered our first humpback.  This was a small one, perhaps no more than 30′ (9.14 meters) long. A minke whale was spotted briefly also. This young whale never fluked when diving and spent much time logging at the surface. We headed to find more and encountered a whale with propeller scars on its left fluke we’d seen last year, MTK.2021.08.15-04 (AKA NYC 0228). Since last year the prop scar closest to the trailing edge were broken through and we could see through it and could see water flowing through it.  This whale also had what appear to be fresh entanglement scars on its tail stock. This whale is a resilient survivor

Thurs Sept 1 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt JR reports another great trip on the Viking Star. There was plenty of action all afternoon with a mix of Fluke, Sea Bass and Porgies. Tomorrow is looking beautiful, so come on out and get in on the fun! The pool winner was Zhijiang Yang from NY, NY with a 5 lb Fluke.
