Wed July 7 – 1/2 Day FISHING PM

Captain JR reports that this afternoon was an action packed trip from start to finish. Fluke, sea bass, and jumbo porgies were coming up all around the boat. Keeper fluke caught in all the areas we fished. The nicer knot head sea bass and Jumbo porgies have moved in much closer to home. Come get…

Wed July 7 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports an excellent day on the Viking Starship. We started out again down the beach and had a mix of smaller Porgies. After that we headed to the lighthouse and found plenty of JUMBO Porgies. There was some time left so we spent about 40 minutes on the SeaBass grounds and had slightly slower action than we have been seeing. The pool winner was Tony Ho from NYC with a 2 3/4 lb Porgy.

Wed July 7 – 1/2 Day AM

Capt JR reports that we started out the trip with a decent pick of Fluke with some keepers in the mix all around the Viking Star. We ventured offshore a bit to target some Sea Bass to end off the trip. We had a good pick of quality Knothead Sea Bass to round out the…

Tue July 6 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt JR reports that the wind and tide were even stronger this afternoon making conditions EXTREMELY tough for a large majority of the trip. However, when the current eased off we returned to our usual areas and found lots of Fluke. Unfortunately, their size did not match the ones we found for our morning trip….

Sun July 4 – Whale Watching

Pelagic birds – yes! Cetaceans – no! After 31 consecutive successful trips since July 17, 2019 and for only the 11th time since 2009, we were unable to find a cetacean (whale, dolphin, or porpoise).  The conditions were excellent, with unlimited visibility, clear skies, cool temperatures (sea surface temperatures from 52.850F to 67.730F). We traveled over 40nm and encountered pelagic birds often, we saw no whales.  Their prey has begun to show up abundantly, in some areas from the surface to the bottom.  We will find them again 71 Wilson’s Storm Petrels 23 Cory’s Shearwaters 11 Great Shearwaters 1 Northern Gannet (immature) 2 black terns (seen near shore and ID’d by birders)

Tue July 6 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports a good day on the Viking Starship. We headed down the beach first thing to get out of the tide and found medium to large Porgies. We worked our way back to the lighthouse when the tide eased and caught Large to Jumbo Porgies. We had the time to head offshore and had all the Sea Bass we needed up to 4 lbs. There were also a couple of keeper Fluke and Blues in the mix today. There was no pool today. Honorable Mention goes to Jeff Greenbaum with a Porgy over 3 lbs and a 4 lb Sea Bass!

Tue July 6 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt JR reports that despite the very windy morning we had a very good trip on the Viking Star. Because of the difficult conditions we fished very local and it paid off quite nicely. Anglers boated some real quality Fluke and Sea Bass with some big Porgies in the mix. The pool winner was Paul…

Mon July 5 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt JR reports that this afternoon we sailed on the Viking Star with a very light crowd and fished some local rock piles. We picked some really nice Sea Bass and a few Porgies. At the change of tide we headed to the Fluke grounds and found fare action throughout. Mixed in with the Fluke…

Mon July 5 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports RED HOT Porgy fishing today on the Viking Starship. We had good conditions and lively action. The Porgies were back to mostly Large and Jumbo size today. After we filled up at the lighthouse we headed offshore and anchored for SeaBass where we found plenty with Porgies mixed in. There was also about a 1/2 dozen Bluefish. The pool winner was Galo Saquinaula from Brooklyn, NY with a 2 lb Porgy.

Mon July 5 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt JR reports very tough conditions this morning with lots of east wind and ebb tide. Fluking was slow due to the lack of a drift. We did manage to boat a couple keepers though. When the wind eased off we were able to find some quality Knothead Sea Bass to end the trip. The…
