Thurs Sept 3 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a slower day of fishing. The fish seemed to be a little off the bite today because of the full moon, but we prevailed and manged to get a good catch. We lucked out by the lighthouse with good conditions as well as the tide being juuuussst right for Porgy fishing. We caught nice size Porgies there, ranging from medium to large. Once we were satisfied with our Porgies we decided to go Sea Bassing. We had a good pick of Sea Bass, had to weave through the small ones, but we ended up getting some nice size keepers. There were tons of Porgies over in our Sea Bass spot today. The pool winner was Christopher Conolly from Queens, NY with a 2.7 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Zhuo Wu from Queens, NY with a…

Wed Sept 2 – Whale Watching

Breaching, lob-tailing, flipper slapping humpback and more! Our 9th trip of 2020 was difficult at first, but ultimately it did not disappoint. Just as in the past few trips, a small humpback would blow and dive, with dive times over 10 minutes long. We stayed with this whale and a few inshore bottlenose dolphins but decided to head off and search elsewhere. It took a bit but just before 4PM in the distance (2 nautical miles) we saw a humpback lob-tailing (slamming its tail on the water) over and over again. We reached it and it continued lob-tailing, the whale eventually rolling onto its back and began flipper slapping, also repeatedly. In a short while, it began to breach repeatedly, interspersed with flipper slapping and logging (resting). Wow, what a wonderfully array of humpback behaviors to see. This whale in…

There were a lot of smalls, but we caught plenty of keepers with some Porgies mixed in. We finished up at the lighthouse and picked away at nice Large Porgies with some Jumbos mixed in. All in all it was a good day. The pool winner was Ron Lawyer with a 2 3/4 lb Porgy.

Tues Sept 1 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM
