Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Capt Dave reports much improved fishing on the Viking Starship. We started out early around the island drifting until it got fast, then we made a few anchor drops. The fishing was good with some big SeaBass. We went back to drifting and it was very good with mostly large and jumbo Porgies and SeaBass. We also had two keeper Striped Bass and some throwbacks. The first place pool winner was Michael Hill with a 3.1 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Marua Roberts from Brooklyn, NY with a 29 1/2″ – 7.5 lb Striped Bass.

Capt Dave reports the toughest day the Viking Starship has had in a long while. There was a giant ground swell on and the water was dirty. We marked them and worked hard at it, but they just didn’t want to bite. After trying a bunch of drifts and anchoring we ended up with some Porgies, a few nice SeaBass, and a couple of Cod. The first place pool winner was Sing Wong from Manhattan with a 3.4 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Philip Marinos with a SeaBass.

9/20-9/22 Capt Steven Jr reports a decent trip with a mixed bag of 8 Yellowsfin, 2 nice Wahoo, a Swordish and Mahi. The yellows were mixed sizes with the biggest around 80 lbs and the sword was around the same. We had 5 sword bites at night but we could only get the one to stay attached. We are looking forward to getting back out there this week and getting revenge. We only have two open boat trips left for 2019 with available spots! Captain Dave reports a light crowd and excellent fishing on the the Viking Starship today. We anchored on the West side of Block Island to start.  The increasing winds made drifting a less desirable option.  We had a nice pick of Porgies and Sea Bass.  When the tide changed we did 2 drops on the South side of Block Island.  We had excellent Sea Bass from these two drops many of them in the 4.5- 5 pound range.  In our last drop we went back to the West side and had lots and lots of large to Jumbo Porgies.  All in all an excellent day. Only one pool today with a light crowd.  Charles Small of Brooklyn NY won the pool with a 3.6 pound Scup.

A good afternoon fishing report comes from Captain Jerry on the Viking Star.  We faced a few challenges this afternoon with the wind picking up and a strong current near the Montauk Lighthouse but were able to put together an excellent catch of keeper Porgies, Sea Bass and Bluefish. All our anglers saw lots of action though we did have to pick through the Sea Bass shorts.  We had some visitors that had never been fishing before and enjoyed catching a variety of fish, some keepers and some shorts and were especially excited to bring a dogfish on board. The pool winner today was Rich Bayer of Ronkonkoma NY with a 3.75 pound Porgy.

Captain Davey reports another excellent day of fishing on the Viking Starship. We traveled to an area near Block Island. Drifting conditions were near perfect, each drift lasting more than an hour with a great mix of large Porgies and quality Sea Bass. The pool winner was Lucas Mok of Queens with a 2.7 pound Scup. Second place in the pool went to Erik Hasima with a 4.9 pound Sea Bass.

Captain Jerry reports a fine day fishing on the Viking Star.  We had some young people on the boat, first time anglers who had the rods bending and brought home dinner. We’re pretty sure we have  them “hooked” on fishing. Pool winner was Kenta Nakajima from Woodside NY with a 3.95 pound Scup.  A nice mix of Sea Bass and large Porgies went home with our anglers enjoying this last day of Summer on the Viking Star. Another night hunting the elusive Striped Bass that swims in legal waters! Captain Jerry reports a better night on the Viking Starship. We started out jigging and after dark used live eels. Anglers did bring in some Striped Bass and were especially disappointed when short by an inch or two. We did get a keeper! Our pool winner was Mike Gundolfo of Shirley, NY with a 15 pound Striped Bass. Our second place pool winner was Nathan Calisi of Holtsville, NY with a 9 pound Bluefish. All our anglers enjoyed a beautiful evening on the water catching and releasing Striped Bass and taking home some Bluefish to make smoked fish dip for the holidays. Capt Dave G reports a good afternoon of fishing aboard the Viking Star. We caught jumbo porgies and sea bass. The pool winner was Lisa Waszkiewicz of Farmingdale NY with a 4.1 pound Sea Bass. Many thanks to Laurie Walsh for sending photos today.    

Captain Dave reports another very good day on the Viking Starship. A beautiful ride to Block Island to start the day. Lots of anglers on board and plenty of action for everyone. We drifted all day long and had some very nice sized Porgies and quality Sea Bass brought on board. Viking anglers went home with stuffed coolers and lots of smiles. First place in today’s pool went to Ricky Morel of Patterson, NJ with a 3.2 pound Scup second place went to Nancy Ramirez of New York, NY with a 4.6 pound Sea Bass. +3  

Capt Dave G reports a very good morning of fishing aboard the Viking Star. We had a beautiful morning and great drifting conditions. The fish were biting and we caught plenty. We ended up with a nice catch of big Sea Bass and Porgies. The first place pool winner was Zesty Meyers of New York, NY with a 4.25 pound Sea Bass the second place pool winner was Michele Lee of the Bronx NY with a 3.95 pound Sea Bass.

Capt Dave reports a decent day on the Viking Starship. The ground swell made for a slower day than we have had lately close to the island. We went offshore for some deeper drops and it was mostly Porgies, some SeaBass and a few Cod. The Porgies were big today and the SeaBass were smaller than they have been. The first place pool winner was Fritz Corbin from Queens, NY with a 2.7 lb Scup. The edible pool winner was Frankie Torrez from Brentwood, NY with a 5.4 lb Cod.
