4 different cetacean species!! This season had been full of surprises, but nothing come close to what we saw at our 2nd stop of this trip. Our first stop was to observe a small group of Tamanend’s bottlenose dolphins, those light greyish bottlenose dolphins seen near shore in both sides of the LI since 2009. We then received a report of a whale near the Mid-Way Buoy (between Montauk and Block Island). We saw the blow from afar and the whales blow and body initially looked like a humpback whale with significant scarring.  The whale was perpendicular to us as is blew and dove, lifting its flukes out of the water. Capt Dave G reports a slow afternoon of fishing in breezy conditions. We did manage a couple of nice keeper fluke along with some porgies and sea bass. There was no pool this afternoon.

It was an absolutely beautiful day to spend the holiday on the water! With sunny skies, excellent visibility, and refreshing breezes, we headed out along the shore following reports of whales near the shore. We found our first whale early, a juvenile humpback off the town of Montauk, in 50 feet of water. The whale was likely feeding at depth completing high fluking dives and long down times. A blow belonging to a second whale was observed in the distance so after spending some time with the first one, we headed out to investigate the second. On our way, one of our volunteers spotted a pod of dolphins to our side, so we changed course to check them out. The dolphins, Tamanend’s bottlenose, were broken up into two large groups, totally 70-90 individuals. After enjoying some time with them, we…
