Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Montauk

Mon Sept 16 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a pretty decent day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. We headed to the east right off the bat this morning and had some issues with the tide. That strong full moon tide was running hard and seemed to bring back in the small SeaBass as we had to pick through…

Sun Sept 15- Whale Watching- Starship

This trip was a gift. The weather was warm like a summer’s day, but with Labor Day two weeks behind us, it felt better than usual. The mood on board was sweet and grateful. We found dolphins (Tamanend’s bottlenose) early, and then spent time with two juvenile humpback whales within a few miles from shore. We decided to continue heading offshore hoping to find the large adults which we spent time with most of the season. As we approached, blows lit up the horizon like (to quote one of our volunteers) fireworks in a summer’s sky. Here, we encountered 16-18 humpbacks, including at least two calves. The calves rested at the surface until breaking into a breach, roll-over, head-stand, and/or tail throw. The adults were in associated pairs and trios surfacing and diving synchronously, feeding on dense patches of bait…

Sun Sept 15 – Full Moon Striped Bass

Captain Carl reports another slower night on the Bass boat. We caught and released a couple GIANT Striped Bass in the 30-50 lb range and a few Blues, showing definite signs of the Fall Run beginning. We are gonna give it another go tonight! The pool winner went to Doug Keller from Southampton, NY.

Sun Sept 15 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Captain JR reports a much improved afternoon onboard the Viking Star. The change of tide turned the fluke bite on and we boated some beauties. We also had sea bass and porgies biting all trip keeping everyone busy at the rail. The first prize pool winner went to Eric Garcia from West Milford, NY with…

Sun Sept 15 – Full Day Block Island Fluke & Sea Bass

Capt Steven Sr. reports some nice action today on the Viking Starlite. Despite tough conditions with the wind off of Block Island, the bites were plentiful. We saw a lot of small SeaBass and short Fluke, but did find a good amount keeper SeaBass in the mix, with only a couple Fluke to bring home….

Sun Sept 15 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports another good day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. We decided to start off in a similar area as yesterday so we set offshore to the east. With windier conditions today, we decided to drop anchor for our pick. The bite remained steady today on the SeaBass, seeing some really large…

Sun Sept 15 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt JR reports some action this morning on the Viking Star. With breezy conditions this morning, we did not have the most favorable fishing. However, we did see some action with decent size Seabass and Porgies. We bent rods on some small Fluke as well, but unfortunately had no keepers. The pool winner went to…

Sat Sept 14 – Full Moon Striped Bass

Captain JR reports a slight improvement in the local bass action. We had a few very nice stripers that were, unfortunately, much too big to keep. Also a few nice blues to bend the rods. Definitely not a slammer trip, but a positive sign for the rapidly approaching fall run.

Sat Sept 14 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Captain JR reports a pretty good afternoon of angling on the Viking Star. We didn’t have the super action packed experience of this morning, but we did have a nice pick of sea bass, porgies, and fluke to keep the rods bent. Definitely a better showing of quality fluke this afternoon though. Some very nice keepers were scooped up in our nets with a couple guys getting a nice limit of flatties. The pool winner went to Rodger from Smithtown, NY with a 3.6 lb Fluke!

Sat Sept 14 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports excellent fishing today on the Viking Starship. With the tide running this morning we decided to start our day offshore towards the east. We got on a very nice first drifted that last over 2 hours with non-stop Porgy and SeaBass action, between medium and large size fish. Fishing conditions were great…
