Capt. Carl reports an overall good trip for the John Viol annual TNT charter aboard the Viking Star! On our way out, we picked up a Yellowfin and a couple mahi before we hit the tile grounds. When we started bottom fishing, we had some good solid tile fishing! Plenty of tilefish came up on every drop and we worked the bottom until late in the afternoon. We then switched back over to the troll, and 10 minutes into it, we doubled up on some large Tunas! After a terrific battle, both anglers landed the pair of Big Eye Tunas! Congrats to the anglers for doing an excellent job fighting them! They were approximately 140 lbs and 170lbs! We got them in and continued to troll into the dark, picking up just one more yellowfin. Unfortunately, things went quiet for the night, with just some tiger sharks taking our baits and a couple more mahi until around sunup when we got another yellow and missed a couple other bites.
We got back on the troll an caught another yellow, as well as a white marlin that put on quite a show. The marlin was released safely.
We went back to bottom fishing and the conditions were a bit tough, though we did pull out some tiles, hakes, cods, barrel fish, and pollack.
Back on the troll into sundown, we picked up three more yellowfins.
We anchored up again for the night and once again it was quiet until around 4:30am when we had a couple more yellowfin come into the boat and lost a couple as well. The last day we picked up a couple more mahi and lost another yellowfin.
Stephen Mauzy had the smaller big eye
John Cody had the bigger one Bill Ikin won tuna pool with 60 lb yellow
Ben Lloyd won tile with 23 pounder
Tom Smolka won edible with a 28 lb barrelfish
All in all it was a successful trip with a great group of people, and Capt Carl, Steve Ho, Hank, Justin, and the rest of the Viking Fleet thank John and Diane Viol for another great charter!
Here are just a few pictures from the last 2 trips out.
Full Day Block Island Porgies and Sea Bass
