Sunday January 5
Local Cod
Captain Steven Jr. reports a decent day on the cod grounds, not as good as last weekend, but at the end of the day anglers had nice bags of Cod, Ling and giant Cunner fillets. We anchored up just as the first light was on the horizon and began to pick right away all around the boat. Keeper and short cod and nice size ling and as it got lighter out it seemed to pick up a bit. Then the anchor pulled as there was still a bit of leftover swell from the storm. We reset but it seemed to shut down. We moved on and began drifting. We had a pick…everywhere we went the rest of the day. We’d run over a pile, catch 10-15 nice cod, then 10 minutes of nothing, then hit a pile and catch again. By the end of the trip we probably averaged 4-5 cod per customer, 6-8 ling and 3-5 big bergalls. As always some faired better than others with high hook being 9 cod. One customer started targeting the giant bergalls with small baits and porgy hooks and had about 30 of the 1-2 lbers. A few of the guys also had a great day with the hake catching anywhere from 15-20 of the bottom dwelling beauties. Sean Libby from Wantaugh NY took the pool with a 14lber and 2nd place went to Daniel Staniszewsli from Lindenhurst with a 12lber.
Early forecast looks like very light wind for Friday for a change and we will be sailing Friday through Sunday next weekend from 3a-3p.
