Sun Aug 11- 36 Hour Great South Channel Whale Watch
CRESLI 36-hour Offshore Trip to the Great South Channel and Chatham, MA August 11-13, 2024 Our first offshore trip since 2019 was a resounding and stellar success! We scheduled the trip to coincide with the Perseid Meteor Shower, and many folks slept out on deck to view the meteors and await the morning. As expected, we arrived in the Great South Channel (the southern end of the Gulf of Maine) in 10 hours, it was clear, calm and beautiful, but with little life. Captain Carl Forsberg had reports from colleagues about whales off Chatham MA, about 2 hours NNW. It was there that we were greeted with the sight of approximately 3 groups of bubble-ring feeding humpback whales, approximately 10 humpbacks per group. Bubble-ring feeding is a cooperative feeding behavior that is unique to humpbacks whales. This is always a…

Capt Mike reports pretty good fishing this morning on the Viking Starlite despite windier conditions. Overall a pretty productive morning with a lot fish in the…
Thurs Aug 15 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM
Captain JR reports another delightful afternoon of fishing onboard the Viking Star. The fishing was much as it has been with sea bass, porgies, and fluke making up the majority of the catch. However, this afternoon we had an improved showing of fluke with lots of “flattie” life and a decent amount of keepers. I…
Thurs Aug 15 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports another good day on the Viking Starship. Porgy fishing was very good by the lighthouse. We also had a bunch of nice Fluke today with about a 1/2 dozen keepers. There were also Mackerel. On the Sea Bass grounds we had a ton of little ones, but everyone managed a few keepers. Michael Bolton from Brentwood, NY was the first place pool winner with a 3.1 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Gim Lee from Queens, NY with a 5.2 lb Fluke.
Wed Aug 14 – Whale Watching- Starship
Without a doubt, exceptional days are becoming standard on Viking/CRESLI whale watching trips this season! Once again, we found a large group of humpbacks, approximately twelve miles from Montauk. We first encountered a group of three humpbacks feeding on dense shoals of bait (likely sand eels) midway through the water column. We know this because the whales pooped frequently and often came up straining the engulfed water through their baleen at the surface. Things quickly got interesting as a mom and calf pair appeared and at least seven more humpbacks were encountered, many of which were in close proximity of the vessel, affording excellent views. One adult humpback approached the vessel no more than ten feet off the starboard bow in an exhilarating encounter for the passengers. As we continued a bit more south, a group of five humpbacks were…

Lots of Sea Bass and Porgies filled the buckets with a few nice keeper to top off the bags of meat. The pool winner today went to Rob Lenois from Larchmont, NY with a 4.5 lb Fluke.
