Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Montauk

Sun Sept 8 – Montauk Jumbo Lighthouse Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass

Captain Dave reports a difficult start today on the the Viking Starship with a really good finish.  There was no bite at the Montauk Lighthouse to start the morning.  We had to go to deeper water to get the rods bending. The bite really picked up in 70-80 feet of water with mixed size Porgies, no Jumbos today, lots of Sea Bass, some Cod and some Green Bonitos. Everyone went home with some really nice keepers.  First place in the pool went to Noel Julio of Queens, NY with a 2.1 pound Scup.  Edible pool winner was Mark Palancia of Yorktown Heights, NY with a 4 pound Cod.

Sun Sept 8 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Dave G reports a slow morning of fishing aboard the Viking Star. We are expecting a better catch with diminishing winds and a favorable tide this afternoon. The pool winner was Betty Englis of New York City with a 3 pound Sea Bass.

Thurs Sept 5 – Montauk Jumbo Lighthouse Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports excellent fishing on the Viking Starship. We anchored by the lighthouse in the windy conditions and the fishing was great. We moved on to the SeeBass grounds and anchored up again. At first it was a lot of Porgies and small SeaBass. It did pick up with some bigger SeaBass. Everyone had no problem bringing home their limits. The pool winner was Michael Laino with a 3 lb Porgy. The Porgy & SeaBass trip is CANCELLED for Friday and Saturday due to the tropical storm conditions expected.

Wed Sept 4 – Montauk Jumbo Lighthouse Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports excellent fishing on the Viking Starship. We started out at the lighthouse in shallow water and the fishing was great with big Porgies. We then headed out to the SeaBass grounds. Capt Dave reports good fishing aboard the Viking Starship. It was slower than the last few days, but we had a steady pick of mostly big Porgies at the lighthouse early this morning. Then we anchored about half way to the SeaBass spot and the Porgy fishing was Red Hot! This lasted for about a half hour with some SeaBass mixed in. After that we headed to the SeaBass spot where it started out slow with mostly Porgies, but the SeaBass started to bite after awhile and we had them up to 5 lbs. There was no pool today.

Sun Sept 1 – Whale Watching

Great trip today on the Viking Starship with Captain Dave in the wheelhouse. Just 15 minutes after passing the Montauk Lighthouse we spotted our first Humpback whale. After leaving the Humpback whale we  saw 2 unidentified whales in the distance.  Passengers were seeing blow in every direction.  We came across 2 Finback whales.  One approached the boat and rolled and exposed their pale underside.  Quite the show from the “greyhound of the ocean”. Approximately 12 Bottlenose Dolphins joined the two Finback whales for a brief time.  After leaving the Finback whales we came across our second Humpback whale fluking several times.  This whale also gave us some flipper slapping which everyone enjoyed.  We continued our search for more marine life.  We continued to see many blows off in the distance.  Unfortunately we were again unable to identify these whales as…
