Fishing Reports

Sun June 14 – Montauk Spring Porgies

Capt Dave reports a decent day on the Viking Starship. The east wind had the Porgies off the bite resulting in a slow pick, but the fish were big. Some anglers retained their limit. We also had a few Bluefish. The pool was a tie between Charles Duhaney from Bronx, NY and Medlin Jackson from Brooklyn, NY with 3 lb Porgies. Unfortunately the trip for tomorrow, Mon June 15  is CANCELLED. Call or log onto vikingfleet.com to book your trip. We are fishing daily at 5am until noon on a limited passenger trip and the fare is $120.00 .

Sun June 14 – 1/2 Day AM

Capt Derek reports that we started off the morning great on the Viking Star. We had two nice fluke right away and thought it was going to be a great bite. Unfortunately, we had a lot of shorts and some Seabass. We made a little move and found jumbo Seabass that we can’t keep until June 23rd when the season opens, but it was nice to see plenty around. We got a couple more keepers and still had plenty of shorts. Hopefully the bigger Fluke start to move in soon. The pool winner was Victoria Knox from Boston, MA With a 4.5lb Fluke. Honorable mention goes to Jack Hammel with a 7lb Fluke.

Sat June 13 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt Derek reports that we started off the afternoon where fishing was decent in the morning. We only caught some short Fluke, a couple Scup, and some Seabass that were all released. We made a move to the lighthouse and fishing wasn’t much better. The day ended with a couple jumbo Scup and a 7.6lb Fluke caught by Robert Caffiero.

Sat June 13- Spring Jumbo Porgies

Capt Dave reports an excellent day of fishing today on the Porgy grounds. In fact he said it was the best day of the 2020 season so far. They drifted right around the lighthouse and had plenty of mostly large and Jumbo Porgies as well as some nice sized Blues mixed in. A great day overall! The pool was won by Denis Ronis with a 3.2lb Porgy.  The edible pool was taken by Adris Hidalgo with a 4lb Bluefish .

Sat June 13- 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Dave G reports a bit of a slower morning on the Viking Star. The water hasn’t warmed up yet and the fish are a bit scattered. Still it was a beautiful morning on the water and we ended up with a mixed bag of Fluke, Porgies and a Bluefish. We also caught a bunch of short Fluke and Sea Bass, all of which were released unharmed. The pool winner was Robert Caffiero of Fresh Meadows who caught a beautiful 5.75lb Fluke .

Sat June 13- Viking Fivestar Private Charter

Capt Derek D reports that they went down to the lighthouse and found the birds so we started off jigging. We had a slow but steady pick of Bluefish and some short Bass. After the Blues went away we stayed where we were and started drifting for Porgies. We picked away at nice size Porgies and ended up with a decent catch. Overall it was a solid morning of fishing and everyone went home with plenty of fish.

Fri June 12 – Spring Jumbo Porgies

Capt Dave reports a tough day on the Viking Starship. It was slower today with the left over ground swell that shut us down a bit. We had 1 hour of really good fishing with quality size Porgies coming over the rails. We made a few more drops and it was a slow pick. We also saw some Bluefish and SeaBass – that were released unharmed! The pool winner today was Noel Henson from Brooklyn, NY with a 3 lb Porgy.

Wed June 10 – Montauk Spring Porgies

Captain Dave reports that we fished locally today right around the lighthouse. The Porgies were bigger than we have seen yet this year with most keepers being Large and Jumbo Porgies. We did not catch limits today, definitely a case of quality over quantity. We did however catch tons of Sea Bass which were released unharmed. Daryl Adams from Atlantic City, NJ was the pool winner with a 3.5 lb Porgy. Call or log onto vikingfleet.com to book your trip. We are fishing daily at 5am until noon on a limited passenger trip and the fare is $120.00 (We will NOT be sailing tomorrow, Thurs. June 11)

Tue June 9 – Private Charter

Capt Derek reports a good full day charter on the Viking Star. We started off the morning Porgy fishing at the lighthouse and it was a solid bite with all larger fish. Once the tide got going we went and tried Fluke fishing and only had some shorts. In the afternoon we went back to try for some more Porgies and with a very fast drift holding bottom it was tough and we only picked a couple more fish. Overall it was a decent day of fishing, definitely great to see the Scup showing up at the lighthouse and being of the larger size.

Tue June 9 – Montauk Spring Porgies

Capt Dave reports Quality over Quantity today on the Viking Starship! We started out drifting by the lighthouse and we picked away at the nicest kind of Large and Jumbo Porgies. After that slowed down we headed down the beach and anchored up finding Porgies of the biggest kind! We also had quite a few Bluefish and some Striped Bass. All of the Porgies caught today were 2 lbs and better. The first place pool winner was Keith Watson from Freeport, NY with a 3.2 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Jonathan Watson from Brooklyn, NY with a 4 lb Bluefish.
