Whale Watching: July 15, 2018 A trip for the ages! 18-20 Humpbacks and 8 fin whales feeding voraciously! We had reports of whales feeding not far from Montauk Point, so we headed to the areas that were in the reports. Less than an hour from the dock we found our first of nearly 30 whales!! Humpbacks and finbacks were feeding on massive quantities of sand eels. We’re used to seeing bubble feeding humpbacks on our trips to the Great South Channel, not necessarily near Montauk, but there they were. In fact, many of the humpbacks that were photographed are known members of the Gulf of Maine stock – and obviously aren’t in the GOM. Montauk Jumbo Lighthouse Porgies & Knothead Seabass Captain Dave reports red hot fishing aboard the Viking Starship this morning! Conditions were excellent right by the lighthouse and we brought in a ton of mixed size porgies and some nice sized seabass. When conditions started to deteriorate here we moved down the beach where porgy fishing was brilliant again. We had non-stop action here and lots of double headers. Once our buckets were full of porgies we went looking for seabass. We had to pick through a lot of small fish but we still got some really nice seabass and everyone reached there limit. Altogether it was an excellent day of fishing. The pool winner was J.C Mcleod from Brooklyn NY with 2.5lb porgy.
