Fishing Reports

Sun Jan 17

Local Cod – Viking Star Captain Carl reports a pretty decent day of cod fishing. Once we started getting a little bit of daylight the cod started biting very good for a couple of awesome drifts. Eventually, that bite died down, so we went looking around and found a couple here and there, but then things really shut down for the end of the trip. All in all it was okay and everyone had cod to take home, some catching a bunch, and some just a few, with everyone averaging 4-5 cod a piece. We are cancelled for tomorrow and Tuesday because of bad weather. We will keep our website updated for the next good weather fishing day. The pool winner was Dennis Dougherty from Island Park, NY with a 14lb cod. We had a bunch of young anglers aboard…

Friday Jan 15

Local Cod Captain Dave reports a good day of fishing aboard the Viking Star. We had a lot of action right at the start of the morning, with some smaller fish coming up. So we went looking for some bigger fish and found some nice ones! The largest cod was a nice 23 pounder, unfortunately he was not in the pool. The first place pool winner was Harold Bussey of Brooklyn with a 19lb cod and in second place was Johnny Rotundi of Brooklyn with a 16lb cod.

Friday Jan 8

Local Cod Captain Dave reports a decent day aboard the Viking Starship today. We stayed a bit more local today because of the unexpected windy weather and managed to put a catch together. When the conditions were right, the fishing was better. Some people had their limit, and some did not. Overall it was an okay day. Mr. Liu of New Hyde Park won the pool with a 14lb cod. We are sailing tomorrow, the office will open at 2am for ticket sales.

Thursday Jan 7

Local Cod Captain Carl reports just an OK day on the cod grounds today. Things started off very good in the morning with nice quality Cods. This lasted for a couple hours, and then things went quiet. We searched around for just a few here and a few there, and a few more at the end of the day, but with a capacity crowd, the numbers of cod were spread throughout the boat. Some folks had 8 or 9, some folks had just 1 or 2, with most averaging 3 or 4 fat Cods. It was fine fishing, just spread out through the crowd. Montauk local Arden Gardell took the pool with a 22 lb cod he jigged up, and Giovanni Manisculeo from Brooklyn, NY took second with a 18 pounder. We are sailing tomorrow! The office will be open…

Wednesday Jan 6

Local Cod Captain Carl reports another SOLID day on the cod grounds. We were able to drift all day, and some drifts were better than others, but we picked away at some nicer sized cod all day. Jigs and bait both worked and there is tons of mackerel and other bait in the area. A bunch of guys had their limits, and some had just 3 or 4, but all around it was solid fishing again. Johnny R was high hook again with 16 keepers. Brian Gillespie from Glen Oaks, NY took the pool with a 26 lb cod, and Kwang “Mr” Oh from Southampton took second with a 22 pounder. All in all it was another good day.

Mon Jan 4

Montauk Local Cod Captain Carl reports a great day on the cod grounds! We caught them on anchor and drifting, and both bait and jigs worked well. We didn’t see any big ones, but plenty of keepers for a full boat limit of tasty green cod! Brian Huggard from Key West, FL  and WFM member took the pool with a 14 pounder. Brian and his two friends teamed up for 54 keeper cod (orl) and plenty of shorts. It was good fishing! Viking Fivestar – Private Charter – Local Cod Captain Steven Sr. reports a great day of cod fishing. They picked at fish all day long. When they got on the drift it was good, good and they had their limit by 11am. After that they did a little catch and release then headed home. We have just added…

Braving the cold and wind, ten year old Chris Viggiano from Seaford, NY caught his limit with fish up to 12lbs and 10 year old Erik Cusumano had his limit up to 15lbs. We also had a group of young anglers from Huntington, Long Island, NY including Aidan McCormack, Jack Gols and Taigue Anna bring home their limit! The first place pool winner was Shastang Liu from New Hyde Park, NY with a 26lb cod. The second place pool winnere was John Pine from Bellerose, NY with a 25lb cod. Unfortunately, the trip scheduled for Sunday at 3am is cancelled due to weather. Montauk Local Cod-Fivestar Captain Steven Sr called in to report a “Lock and Load” day…

Sunday Dec 27

Christmas Cod Special Captain Carl reports another good day on the cod grounds. The weather wasn’t as nice as yesterday, making fishing a little tougher, but everyone who stayed at the rail put a good catch of COD together. Father and son team Sean and Brendan Farrell teamed up for 26 keepers and just as many shorts, ORL, and Johnny “pizza” had 14 for himself ORL. Vikings own Alex B had a day off so of course he came fishing and jigged 13 keeper Cod. Tayfun Yazies from the Brooklyn took the pool with a 17 pound Golden Cod! All in all it was another good day!. Montauk Jumbo Porgies and Sea Bass Captain Dave reports another slow day aboard the Viking Starship. We had a handful of porgies and sea bass, with more codfish coming over the rails today. The…
