Sun Sept 13 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a “Bail Job” just off the beach this morning on the Viking Starship. Anglers were bringing medium to large Porgies over the rail 2 at a time. It wasn’t long before everyone had their limit. We headed South to find some quality Sea Bass, but the pickings were slim. We fished around and picked up some keeper Sea Bass and also some nice Triggerfish and Blowfish. First place in the pool today went to Santos Cruz of Roosevelt, NY with a 2 1/2 lb Porgy. Edible pool went to Ricardo Villalobo of Uniondale, NY with a 4 lb Triggerfish. Tomorrow the Viking Starship is headed to Block Island to begin our daily Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass trips.

Capt Dave reports a good day of fishing on the Viking Star. Porgy fishing was excellent at the lighthouse with mixed size fish. The first place pool winner was Siv Wah Cheng with a 2 1/2 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Jose Rodriguez from Flushing, NY with a 7 lb Bluefish.

Wed Sept 9 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a good morning of fishing over by the lighthouse this morning. We started out with some nice long drifts at the Lighthouse, we caught small to medium Porgies. We then decided to go a little down the beach and we anchored up there. We caught mostly large Porgies while there. We went Sea Bassing and had to pick through a bunch of small one but we got out fair share of keepers. The pool winner was Konstantions Koufalis from Queens, NY with a 2.7 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Kashka Huges from Brooklyn, NY with a 3 lb Sea Bass.

Sun Sept 6 – Whale Watching Tour

Oh my, 60 Bottle Nose dolphins  and 9 Humpbacks in all! Dr. Artie Kopelman reports a great day of whale sightings. It was a little bouncy as we headed out in search of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises). We headed directly to where we had seen the whales yesterday, but we couldn’t find them at first and we headed to another area.  It took some time, but we decided to head NNE the eyes of Captain David Marmeno found a whale about 2.3 nautical miles (nm) from where yesterday’s whales were. Once we found our first whale, we began seeing MANY more. We encountered one of Saturday’s whales and stayed with and photographed 3 others within 1.1 square miles. We also encountered multiple groups of inshore Bottle Nose Dolphins, about 60 individuals in all. By the time we had to leave,…

Capt Dave reports a tougher day on the Viking Starship. There were smaller Porgies at the lighthouse. It was mainly a mix of medium and large with a few jumbos mixed in.
