Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Montauk

Sun June 21 – Whale Watching

We saw dolphins nearshore and were surrounded by whales offshore! What a day! 15 minutes after leaving Montauk Harbor and heading east we found our first cetaceans, a small group of 6-8 Tamanend’s bottlenose dolphins. It got better and better!  We find our 1st finback whale an hour later, just a few miles from shore. We had reports of whales offshore and we headed out. Offshore a few hours later we find a motherload of whales – finbacks, minkes , and humpbacks. We were officially surrounded by whales for the next few hours. Ultimately, we encountered approximately 10-12 finback whales,  3-5 minke whales, 2 humpback whales (one known from the coast of Virginia and one yet to be identified). The humpbacks were each bubble-ring/open mouth feeding on sand eels. The entire water column was filled with sand eels from the surface…

Tues Sat June 23 – Montauk Spring Porgies and Seabass

Capt. Dave reports another day of excellent fishing! On the morning tide we went on the east side of the Lighthouse and fishing was incredible! We had all large and jumbo fish. As the tide started to change we went under the cliffs and continued to have a really great pick. Mostly large fish. The…

Mon Jun 22 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Captain JR reports a very nice afternoon on the Viking Star. We spent the trip drifting around the lighthouse and catching GIANT striped bass, blues, and a few porgies. A wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Sun June 21 – Montauk Spring Porgies and Seabasss

Capt. Dave reports an excellent day of fishing! Definitely one of the best trips of the season. We did very well on our first drop but decided to try out some new spots that our Capt. has yet to venture to and we were rewarded! We caught tons of fish everywhere we went. Large beautiful…

Sun June 21 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Captain Carl reports a beautiful morning on the 1/2 Day boat! Our anglers enjoyed catching Porgies, Sea Bass, and Fluke. We can’t wait to get back out for the afternoon trip! Congrats to our pool winner Juan Morales of Medford, NY, who caught a 2.8-pound Porgy.

Sat June 20 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Captain JR reports a slow pick all afternoon on the Viking Star. Like our morning trip, we had some Seabass, Porgies, and Fluke. The weather was much improved, but just a pick of fish this afternoon. The pool winner was Robert Nature from Islip, NY , with a 2.2 lb Seabass.

Sat June 20 – Montauk Spring Porgies & Sea Bass

Captain Dave reports a great morning on the water. Fishing was great! We had a strong pick of keeper Porgies all day. Towards the end we caught a few Sea Bass and Striped Bass. Congratulations to our pool winner, Ramiro Reyes of West Warwick, NY, who landed a 2-pound Porgy! We will be out again…

Sat June 20 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Captain JR reports a WINDY morning onboard the Viking Star. However, we found some calm waters to fish and caught some Fluke, Seabass, and Porgies. The added bonus was seeing a few humpback whales give us a show for the last half an hour of our trip. The pool winner was  Leo Peter from Darien,…

Fri June 19 – Sunset Jigging for Striped Bass & Blues

Captain JR reports a slower evening of jigging on the Viking Star. Despite having luck so far on both the flood and ebb, tonight’s outgoing tide made things a bit difficult. The fish were moving a lot and scattered around. But, we boated few Striped Bass and a couple slot sized keepers along with some…

Fri June 19 – 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Captain JR reports a slower afternoon onboard the Viking Star. The change of tide this afternoon didn’t seem to help us much. We had a couple striped bass, a few porgies, and a handful of sea bass. Not as exciting as our morning trip, but still a nice afternoon. The pool winner was Gianna Defranco…
