Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Tue Sept 29 – Block Island Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports a slower day on the Viking Starship. Possibly the moon tide had the fish off the bite. We started out offshore and had some SeaBass, Porgies and Cod. It was okay, then we headed in close to Block Island where we have been fishing and had a slow steady pick of mostly Large Porgies, a few SeaBass and some Triggerfish. The first place pool winner was Louis Murray from Brooklyn, NY with a 2.7 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Yan Yee Chung from Queens, NY with a 4.2 lb SeaBass. Tomorrow’s trip is CANCELLED due to weather.

Mon Sept 28 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports a steady pick all day on the Viking Starship. We drifted inside by Block Island the whole trip and had a mix of Porgies and SeaBass. It was by no means a slammer day, but everyone was able to get what they needed. We also had Triggerfish and a 10 lb Striped Bass. The bigger fish caught today were not in the pool. The First Place winner was Jeff Lin from Queens with a 2.6 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Fong Chang from Queens with a 2.8 lb SeaBass.

Sun Sept 27- 1/2 Day Fishing PM

Capt JR reports from the Viking Star. A long slow roll and a slow bite made for a challenging afternoon. We did have some keeper Fluke this afternoon. Fluke season ends Wednesday Sept. 30th so the crew and captain were glad to have some come aboard this afternoon. Fluke, Sea Bass and a single Porgy. First place in this afternoon’s pool went to Fabian Sanchez of NYC with a 3.5 pound Fluke and Mary Weiss of Hartsdale NY Westchester County won 2nd place in the pool with a 3.3 pound Sea Bass. Mary won first place in the pool this morning and 2nd place in the pool this afternoon. Congratulations Mary!

Sun Sept 27 – Block Island Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a good day on the Viking Starship. We started out today close up to to Block Island where the bite on the morning tide made for a slow start with smaller fish than we had been seeing. The later tide change brought much better fish and the bite was on. Not a slammer of a day, but good. Bigger fish and more fish. At least half a dozen Triggerfish brought over the rail and good size Porgy and Sea Bass to end the day. Emil Sullivan of Albany, NY won first place in the pool with a 3 pound Porgy. Joseph Andres of Bridgewater, NJ won the edible pool with a 4.2 pound Sea Bass.

Sun Sept 27- 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt JR reports from the Viking Star. Fishing was a little more challenging today than yesterday. We had a great group of anglers that had a lot of enthusiasm. They were getting to try out different techniques as demonstrated by our experienced crew. The bite on the morning tide was a little slow. No keeper Fluke this morning but some nice Knothead Sea Bass, Porgies and Mackerel. All the Viking Captains, Crew and Office Staff want to give a Emily B. a big send off on her last day working the 1/2 day Fishing Trips this season. She’s promised to come back next year. She’s a favorite of anglers and the entire Montauk Harbor Community. Mary Weiss of Hartsdale, NY won the pool this morning with a 3.2 pound Sea Bass  photos to follow ……………….

Sat Sept 26 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies & Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a good day on the Viking Starship. We spend the day drifting close to Block Island and had a mix of Porgies and Sea Bass. We also had a few trigger fish. The first place pool winner was Leber Rincon from Bringwood, NY with a 3 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was William Brown from Queens, NY with a 5 lb Trigger fish. Fri Sept 25 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports decent fishing on the Viking Starship. The fishing was fair up close to the island with mostly Porgies and some small SeaBass mixed in. We went offshore and made a couple of drops where we found very nice size SeaBass with some Scup mixed in. We also had about 10 Cod and a couple of Bluefish. The first place pool winner was Fred Hauck from Webster, NY with a 2.81 lb Porgy. The edible pool winner was Charles Vaughn from Hempstead, NY with a 10 lb Cod. Thurs Sept 24 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports much better day on the Viking Starship. It was not as good as it has been, but it was a huge improvement. We had a lot of Porgies with SeaBass mixed in. A pile of Striped Bass came by the boat and we managed about 5 keepers. The first place pool winner Miichael Johnson from Hempstead, NY with a 2 1/2 lb Porgy. Wed Sept 23 – Block Island Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports that with the rough seas of the previous days which caused a swell combined with the and  water we had a slow day of fishing. The fish just really did not bite like they normally do. We ended the day with very few Porgies and  more Sea Bass. At the end of the day the fish we did catch were good quality size fish. In the mix we also landed about 10 keeper Cod. The pool winner was Jeff Greenbaum of Scarsdale NY with a 2.4lb Porgy. Second place was taken by Robert Funderburk of Willingboro NJ who caught a 6lb Cod.  We are heading out tomorrow hoping for a much better day. The boat is sold out tomorrow (Thursday Sept. 24) but we have limited spots available on Friday (Sept. 25) and the weather looks fantastic!…
