Sat Aug 22 – Whale Watching
Despite a light drizzle at the dock, we sailed away from Montauk under cloudy, but dry conditions, and found our first whale approximately three miles from shore. This was a minke whale, the smallest of baleen whales, which surfaced regularly around the vessel in short (30 seconds to 1.5 minutes) intervals while feeding on the…

Fri Aug 21 – Whale Watching
A challenging yet successful trip ! The predicted conditions offshore where we’d been seeing whales was such that to ride there to search there would have been extremely uncomfortable. Since the nearshore waters are where we expect to see Tamanend’s bottlenose bolphins and juvenile humpback whales, we decided to turn west at the lighthouse and search those waters those nearshore….
Fri Aug 21 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Thurs Aug 20 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports that fishing was not bad today, but it was a bit off. Starting out at the light house we picked away at smaller Porgies in the lite tide which made the fish lazy. We caught, but everyone had to work at it. Drifting was much better than on the anchor. It was pretty much straight Porgies with a handful of Sea Bass. There were a lot of Sea Bass bites. The pool winner was Orville from NJ with a 2.2 lb Porgy.

Wed Aug 19 – Whale Watching
Conditions were perfect for a whale watch as we left the dock under clear skies and a light breeze. Almost immediately after passing the point (lighthouse), we encountered pelagic bird activity: Wilson’s storm petrels, Corys, great, and sooty shearwaters, along with gulls and terns by the hundreds. Bait was thick at the surface and we…

Wed Aug 19 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports that fishing was a bit off today on the Viking Starship. The fishing at the lighthouse was quiet today, so we tried a spot to the east. We worked on some nice size Porgies. It ended up okay after drilling it out there. The catch was mostly Porgies with a handful of…
