2 Day Deepwater Exploratory -Monday May 14th to Thursday May 17- Viking Star
Capt Steven Sr. reports an okay trip, 90% due to mother nature! The first area we looked at had a good sign of Big Tilefish. We landed four from 27 lbs to 39 lbs and broke off a bunch. We broke lewars, hooks, line, ect… We then moved on to find a slow pick of Tile and Hake and some more night Tiles in the 20 to 30 lb range. By the end of the day we had some fish in the coolers, but it could have been better. The weather became a factor from lunch time until dark where the winds were 25 to 25 mph, making it very difficult.
On day 2 we had a shot of Tile, Hake and Pollock for a few drifts. Then the wind changed 180 degrees out of the east and it slowed everything down for a good part of the day. By 3pm the bite started up and we had decent fishing with Tiles and Hake for the rest of the day. The First Place pool winner was Dwayne Sherard from Baldwin, NY with a 38 lb Tilefish. The Second Place pool winner was Brad Bergen from E. Islip, NY with a 37.5 lb Tilefish. Dwayne Sherard was also the Edible Pool winner with a 12 lb Hake. The next offshore trip is this coming Monday, May 21st. It is a George’s Bank Cod/Haddock/Halibut Hunt. Give the office a call to make a reservation or you can book online at vikingfleet.com
