Sat Aug 8 – Whale Watching

Another successful 3 species trip!

On today’s trip we escaped the oppressive heat on land and headed to cooler waters (cooler compared to land but much warmer that the lower 50’s sea surface temperature (SST) we had in May) and initially found 50-60 Tamanend’s bottlenose dolphin and 1 fin whale close to Montauk Light We headed out further and 8 humpback whales. OK, so it’s not 36 humpbacks, but what made up for the lower numbers was the panoply of behaviors we saw. From repeated full-body breaches, to lob-tailing, to chin-slapping, flipper-slapping, and more. These whale were feeding at depth. The pelagic birds were sparse until we found the whales and then Wilson’s storm petrels, along with Great, Cory’s, Sooty, and an occasional Manx shearwaters made appearances.

  • 50-60 Tamanend’s bottlenose dolphins
  • 8 humpback whales
  • 15 Great shearwaters
  • 4 Cory’s shearwaters
  • 2 Sooty shearwaters
  • 600+ Wilson’s Storm petrels
