Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Montauk

Sun Feb 1

Captain Carl reports a very, very slow day on the Viking Starship. We had a lot of wind and left over seas to contend with. It seemed to have shut everything down. We scratched out 1 keeper cod, a few shorts, a handful of ling and a few bergalls. It was a very cold, slow day. There was a lot of bait around, so we are looking forward to getting back out there after all this horrible weather finally calms down. The pool winner was Michele Conenna of Brooklyn, NY with a 23 1/2 Inch cod. We are watching the weather for this upcoming week, and it looks like the next time we will get out for Local Cod will be on Wednesday, February 4th at 3am. Fri Jan 23

Local Cod Captain Steven Sr reports we ended up better than we thought! After an extra hour and 45 mins of fileting fish at the dock with Capt Steven Sr, Capt Dave and Ray- we probably averaged 3-5 cod, 3-7 ling, 3-5 xl bergalls for everyone to go home with. And everyone left with a hefty bag of meat! The morning bite was the key of the day. After 9:30am it was slow but we still managed few cod and lots of bergalls throughout the rest of the day. Still lots of bait in all areas water temp still 44 surface and 46-47 on bottom, so still good days to come. A big thank you to all who were on board from Capt Steven Sr, Capt Dave and Ray. The first place pool winner was Geoff Hollander of Syosset with…

Wed Jan 21

Local Cod Captain Dave reports that we started the day with plenty of action but unfortunately very few keepers. We worked our way around and made a few stops stopping on a wreck where we had a good shot of Pollack and cod. Throughout the day we had shots of fish here and there but they were mostly on the smaller side. Capt. Dave decided to put in some extra time and all of a sudden one area  turned on producing double headers from 8 to 12 pounds. We also caught a nice shot of Cod in the 12 to 18 pound class. Both jigs and bait worked well. Jessie James from Bridgetown NJ had three double headers and was the first place winner of today’s Cod pool with a beautiful 18 pounder! Second place went to Tony Cruz of…

Sat Jan 17

Sat Jan 17 Local Cod Captain Steven Sr. reports a very good day on the cod grounds aboard the Viking Starship. The day started out very cold and windy but we pushed on and made it to the fishing grounds where the cod were waiting and hungry! We anchored and the first half hour was phenomenal cod fishing! 90% were all keeper cod with fish up to 18lbs! Then the sun came up and the wind dropped out, so we began to drift. Some drifts were better than others, but there was tons of action with a mix of keepers and some shorts. It began to quiet down around 1pm and we went west, but we came to the results of no wind, no tide and no bites. We marked herring and mackerel and overall we had an excellent day…

Saturday Jan 3

Thurs Jan 15 Local Cod Capt Dave reports despite the snowy, rainy, windy and cold weather conditions it was a good day of fishing with about 150 keepers. There was a lot of action and a whole lot of throwbacks. The fish size was smaller today compared to our last trip. The first place pool winner was Sal Giambrone from Holbrook, NY with a 13.8 lb Cod. In second place was Steve Kosmidis from West Chester, PA with a 9.8 lb Cod.   Sun Jan 11 Local Cod Capt Dave reports good fishing aboard the Viking Starship. There was a lot of action with as many keepers as throwbacks. Many had their limit and everyone had fish to take home. Kwok Keung Lau of Brooklyn, NY took the first place pool with a 33.8 lb Cod. In second place was…

Sunday Dec 28

Christmas Cod Captain Ant reports an absolutely awesome day of cod fishing. We had action from start to finish today, which most likely was due to sloppy conditions. Most fares caught between 6 and 10 cod, with quite a few in the double digits today. Jigs once again were hot early for those who put…

Saturday Dec 20

Saturday Dec 27 Christmas Cod An updated report of today’s excellent cod fishing on the Starship. First off a correction, Thomas Alexopolous took high hook honors with 15 keepers and an equal number of shorts. Not 50 as initially reported…damn cell service:) We started our with a couple of strong drifts with many rods bending. It was 50/50 on shorts to keepers however we still managed to put a good amount on the boat. As the sun got higher the bite slowed to an occasional flurry. We marked em but obviously they were on their siesta. Then like a switch, they turned on and got bigger and bigger it seemed. Nice fat 8-12lb green cod flying with a few doubles in the mix. Besides Tommy, Tommy’s dad, Martin Wellen Dowd, Dave “Bunk Man” Duffy and Sully all had above average…
