Montauk

Sun July 4 – Whale Watching

Pelagic birds – yes! Cetaceans – no! After 31 consecutive successful trips since July 17, 2019 and for only the 11th time since 2009, we were unable to find a cetacean (whale, dolphin, or porpoise).  The conditions were excellent, with unlimited visibility, clear skies, cool temperatures (sea surface temperatures from 52.850F to 67.730F). We traveled over 40nm and encountered pelagic birds often, we saw no whales.  Their prey has begun to show up abundantly, in some areas from the surface to the bottom.  We will find them again 71 Wilson’s Storm Petrels 23 Cory’s Shearwaters 11 Great Shearwaters 1 Northern Gannet (immature) 2 black terns (seen near shore and ID’d by birders)

Tue July 6 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports a good day on the Viking Starship. We headed down the beach first thing to get out of the tide and found medium to large Porgies. We worked our way back to the lighthouse when the tide eased and caught Large to Jumbo Porgies. We had the time to head offshore and had all the Sea Bass we needed up to 4 lbs. There were also a couple of keeper Fluke and Blues in the mix today. There was no pool today. Honorable Mention goes to Jeff Greenbaum with a Porgy over 3 lbs and a 4 lb Sea Bass!

Tue July 6 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt JR reports that despite the very windy morning we had a very good trip on the Viking Star. Because of the difficult conditions we fished very local and it paid off quite nicely. Anglers boated some real quality Fluke and Sea Bass with some big Porgies in the mix. The pool winner was Paul…

Mon July 5 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports RED HOT Porgy fishing today on the Viking Starship. We had good conditions and lively action. The Porgies were back to mostly Large and Jumbo size today. After we filled up at the lighthouse we headed offshore and anchored for SeaBass where we found plenty with Porgies mixed in. There was also about a 1/2 dozen Bluefish. The pool winner was Galo Saquinaula from Brooklyn, NY with a 2 lb Porgy.

Mon July 5 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt JR reports very tough conditions this morning with lots of east wind and ebb tide. Fluking was slow due to the lack of a drift. We did manage to boat a couple keepers though. When the wind eased off we were able to find some quality Knothead Sea Bass to end the trip. The…

Captain Jr reports from the afternoon trip that we had lots of action  with fluke and sea bass coming over the rail all trip. The size of the fish wasn’t as impressive as our morning trip, but it was lots of action. We did end up ok with some keeper fluke and sea bass with…

Sun July 4 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Captain Dave reports that in today’s perfect fishing conditions we caught a ton of Porgies! The fish landed were mostly in the medium or large size range with some Jumbos mixed in. We had plenty of action with most anglers catching their limit so Capt Dave headed off to the east to hit some Sea bass rocks and we were rewarded with plenty of keepers with everyone catching their limit. Today’s first place pool winner was Ricardo Capella of Brooklyn NY with a 3lb porgy.  Second place was taken by Moustafa Nosaed also of Brooklyn who landed a nice 2.4lb Sea bass. Happy 4th of July from us all here at Viking Fleet.
