Tue Oct 22 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass
Capt Dave reports great SeaBass fishing on the Viking Starship. We had a light crowd today and they were all interested in going after the SeaBass, so we mostly fished offshore. We found plenty of them, but had to move around a bunch because of the dogfish. Everyone had a handful of Porgies and had their limit of Jumbo SeaBass. We only had a SeaBass pool and the winner was Rob Moore from Brentwood, NY with a monster 6.01 pounder!
Mon Oct 21 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports a good day aboard the Viking Starship. We anchored up high and tight to Block Island today. We had a good steady pick of Porgies and Sea Bass, but they were smaller than we had been catching the last few days. Still we managed to get plenty of keepers and some Bluefish as well. Everyone had plenty of fish in their coolers when we arrived back in Montauk. Glen Montrose got first place in the pool with a 2.8 pound Scup. Jonathan Roberts won the edible pool with a 4.7 pound Bluefish.
Sun Oct 20 -Block Island Cod and Sea Bass – Viking Star
Capt Steven Sr. reports from the Viking Star. Such a beautiful day on the water had us steaming a little further to the East than Saturday. Lo and behold when our anglers dropped their lines in the water we had arrived at Jumbo Sea Bass city. Unfortunately many Dogfish were mixed in with the Sea Bass. The quality and size of the Sea Bass was well worth staying in that location and dealing with the Dogfish. We did manage a handful of Cod, maybe a dozen or so, but due to the density of Sea Bass and Dogfish our bait couldn’t stay on the bottom long enough for the Cod to find it first. Definitely a great day for quality jumbo Sea Bass. All of our anglers went home with their limit of Sea Bass. Jimmy Daliesso of East Rockaway,…
Sun Oct 20 – Block Island Cod & Sea Bass – Viking Fivestar
Captain Derek reports better conditions today on the Viking Fivestar. The Dogfish left us alone and the fishing was great. Plenty of Jumbo Knothead Sea Bass to be had for all with the largest in the 5 pound plus range. Scup for some and a Bluefish surprise that didn’t manage to bite off the line. We managed a handful of keeper Cod with just as many shorts which tells us the Cod are coming in and we can expect a good season. Everyone on board ended up with their Sea Bass limit and some beautiful big fish.
Sat Oct 19- Striped Bass Fishing
Captain Derrick reports from the Viking Starship. We had unfavorable conditions most of the night which made for a tough drift. We read a lot of bait in the water and marked some fish. Fought but lost a large shark at the boat, landed one Striped Bass just shy of keeper sized and lost a bunch of other Bass. There was no pool tonight. Our last trip of the season for Striped Bass is Saturday October 26th at 6PM. We hope to finish with a load of keepers and a tightly contested pool.
Sun Oct 20 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports a good day of fishing on the Viking Starship today. A nice variety of fish and some surprises. We drifted inshore today and had a steady pick of mixed size Porgies, mixed size Sea Bass, some Bluefish and the first Blackfish of the season. First place in the pool went to Nick Mavros with a jumbo Porgy of 3.6 pounds. Edible pool went to Mario Siajes with a 6.5 pound Blackfish.
Saturday Oct 19 – Block Island Cod and Sea Bass – Viking Star
Capt Steven Sr. reports a great start to today’s trip , catching an 18lb Cod on the first drift. We continued to have a really good shot of fish, catching some nice Cod and Sea Bass on every drift. Then the dogfish showed up and continued to be a real pain on every drift for the rest of the trip. Every time we moved the dogfish showed up again making for difficult conditions. The Cod pool was won by Sam Braithwaite of Cambria Heights NY with a 10lb Cod, (the 18 pounder was not in the pool ). Jason Vitacco of Roselle NJ won had a beautiful 5lb Sea Bass to win the edible pool. Capt Steven is sailing tomorrow at 4am and there are a limited number of spots available. The office opens at 3am for check in so…
Sat Oct 19 – Block Island Cod & SeaBass – Viking Fivestar
Sat Oct 19 – Block Island Cod & SeaBass – Viking Fivestar Capt Derek reports a good day on the Viking Fivestar. We started off with a nice pick of keeper Jumbo SeaBass, but then got taken over by dogfish. We went inshore more and found some nice Seabass, but got dogged up again! We made a couple of moves and ended the day on a spot from earlier. All in all it was a good day of SeaBassing with a couple of Cod mixed in. The big SeaBass was 5.1 lbs. Just about everyone went home with their limit.
Sat Oct 19 – Block Island Fall Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass
Capt Dave reports okay fishing today on the Viking Starship. We stayed inshore all day spending the day drifting close to the island to stay away from the dogfish in the deeper water. There were plenty of nice size Porgies with SeaBass mixed in. Everyone had a couple of SeaBass, so we didn’t have to go and search for them. There were also a lot of Bluefish caught today. The first place pool winner was Khaled Mohammed from Staten Island, NY with a 3.8 lb Jumbo Porgy! The edible pool winner was 11 year old Brian Keith from Oceanside, NY with a 14 lb Bluefish!! Way to go Brian!
Wed Oct 16- Block Island Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports that they started the day tied up close to the Island and had a good pick of nice sized Sea Bass and Porgies on the Viking Starship. When the tide started to run too fast we headed offshore to a spot we haven’t fished all year. The results were great! We caught plenty of nice size Porgies and some great Sea Bass as well as 4 Cod and some Bluefish. The pool winner was Michael Morgan with a 3lb Porgy.
Tues Oct 15 – Block Island Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass
Captain Dave reports a fair to good day fishing on the Viking Starship. We started drifting inshore of Block Island with almost perfect conditions- long slow drift in an easy tide. We had a steady pick, but no Jumbo Porgies today. Things got rough with the wind against the tide and we moved offshore. As the day progressed the seas were calm and sun strong. Offshore we had a slow pick of Porgies, Sea Bass and 8-10 Cod. The Cod were green; a good sign for the upcoming trips at the Viking Fleet that will focus on Block Island Cod and Sea Bass. The Dogfish were present offshore, but not as bad as a couple of days ago. First place in the pool was a tie between Robert Lisica and Dwayne Sherard with 3.3 pound Scup. Second place went to…
Mon Oct 14- Block Island Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass
Captain Dave reports a mixed day of fishing today aboard the Viking Starship. After getting to Block Island, we decided to stay inshore to avoid the voracious Dogfish that made the Porgy catching difficult yesterday. We had a slow but steady pick of medium to large Porgy. Initially we had to pick through a lot of short Sea Bass, but once the tide turned, the conditions improved. The fishing today required a little more patience than our regular anglers are accustomed to, but by the end of the day we were able to put together a good catch. First place in the pool went to Egbert Bangari of the Bronx, NY with a 3.1 pound Scup. Second place went to Rick Ebanks with a 5.2 pound Sea Bass.
