Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Half Day Fluke

Sun July 12

Night Striped Bass-Starship Captain Carl reports a fair night of fishing Saturday night. We first chased some birds around, but they were diving on tiny bait with small blues under them. Once the sun went down and the tide switched over, we had steady action all night with a good amount of striped bass, as well as lots of blue fish! It was an action packed leading to bloody decks! All in all a fun night aboard the Viking Starship with great weather and fun fishing!! The first place pool winner was Andrea Stimpfl from Hauppauge, NY with a 36lb 6oz striped bass. The second place pool winner was Tony Sales from East Hampton, NY with a 34lb 6oz bass. . Montauk Jumbo Porgies Captain Dave reports good fishing today on the Viking Star. Everyone had their limit. There were…

Half Day Fluke AM Captain Joey D reports an excellent morning of fluke fishing today aboard the Viking Star. It was a beautiful day with great fishing! Monday Sept 2- Happy Labor Day!

Half Day Fluke PM Capt Ant reports fluking remained red hot in the afternoon. At one point we had 0.0kt drift- pretty much anchored by wind against tide and still bailed them. Congrats to Michael Mella from East Hampton NY who took first prize in the pool with a 6.2lber and our good friend Don Mitchell from Holtsville was a close second with a 5.8lber We also had a 65lb plus torpedo ray which was released to shock again! Half Day Fluke AM Capt Carl reports that fluke fishing on the Viking Starship today was SUPERB! Like all summer long, most people went home with lunch and dinner. What a FANTASTIC season of fluke fishing we’ve had on the Viking Fleet. The pool winner was Louis Speigel with a 6lbs fluke. We are still sailing DAILY at 8:30am or 1:30pm.

Sunday Sept 1

Sunday Striper Special To top of our weekend, our new Sunday 5-10 eel trip was a dud.  For the first time this year we went fishless.  We hit every spot under the sun, not even a blue fish.  We did have a few bites, seemed like bass bites as eels came up in one piece, but the way it’s been lately, those chances needed to be maximized but weren’t.  It seems the new moon brought on a day bite again so hopefully as we get on the other side the stronger night tides will get them back on the feed.  Its 9/2, history doesn’t lie, the fall run is close and soon the lull will be over. Full Day Porgies and Sea Bass Capt Dave reports yet another good day out porgy fishing. Once again we had nice quality…

Saturday Aug 31

Half Day Fluke PM and AM Capt Ant reports the AWESOME fluke fishing continued today on both the morning and the afternoon trips. In the AM we hit the spots we had a hot bite at yesterday and it didn’t disappoint. In 4 drifts we had over 30 keepers. Unfortunately it got a bit ugly so we abandoned the zone to find out they were biting just as good close to home.  The first place pool winner in the morning was Greg Figarello from Ronkonkoma with a 6.25lb fluke. John Gilday from East Williaston got second place in the pool. In the afternoon we once again had Super fishing even with a brisk 2.4knot drift. We saw some bigger fish this afternoon as well with the largest fish going a solid 8lbs. The pool winners Were Scott ans Jack Archer…

Sunday August 25

Sunset Striped Bass Trip Capt Ant reports a bloodbath with blues last night.  It was awesome!!  We had a bunch of families with many young girls beating up on the choppers and loving every minute of it.  Hopefully the new shoes for school weren’t worn last night!!  After boating about 100 of the yellow eyed beauties, we were off to bass fish with eels.  As it seems like its been lately, we got one immediately, a healthy 20lber and then the bottom dropped out with the tide for the remainder of the evening.  We got in a couple of drifts at the start of the flood but never really got to feeding speed.  All in all rod bending action and an absolutely gorgeous Sunset!! Adam Taylor from North Bellmore took the pool with a 17lb striper. Gabriella Cohn from Setauket…

Monday Aug 19

Sunset Stripers Capt Ant reports two nights in a row of slow fishing on the Sunset Jigging trip.  The bite has been off at the light for the past few days so we gave up on the jigs and tried eeling to entice some fish to bite.  There is so much bait around the lighthouse zone right now that even eels made no difference.  Both Sunday and Monday trips delivered 2 bass each trip with a few blues in the mix.  Could be our August summer doldrums are here, or could be that they are waiting for the moon to start feeding again.  Either way it’s been tough fishing.  Pool winners were:Kathleen Brophy Middletown, NY with a 26lbs Second Place went to Nick Puglisi, Westchester, with a 15lbs Half Day Fluke PM Capt Carl reports a great afternoon on the…

Sunday Aug 18

Half Day Fluke PM The afternoon fishing was on the slow side. Wind and tide made it tough. We managed to scratch together a small catch- a mix of sea bass, porgies ans fluke. Half Day Fluke AM Capt Ant reports a sensational fluke trip and summer bottom fishing trip.  We went where we have been going to start only to find every boat in Montauk combing the bottom.  We picked but not enough so we headed off to a new zone and it certainly paid off.  Large fat fluke, jumbo sea bass and monster porgy’s throughout a very long drift.  We wound up tallying 38 keeper fluke for 34 fares and did the majority in 3 drifts. Full Day Porgies and Sea Bass Fishing was a little slower than it has been due to the strong tides. When the…

Thursday August 15

Night Striped Bass Capt. Ant reports a frustrating night of Bassing.  15-20kts out of the SW against a strong Ebb…yuck..tough drifting conditions had us drifting backwards in order to keep the lines straight.  The fish were there and stacked and biting, but they were biting tentatively.  I saw 3 fish come up last night just holding the eel tail, never getting the hook, and it wasn’t from swinging early.  You really had to be experienced to catch last night as our regulars, Chris Luke, Doug Seay and Jonny Jesus of the Elbow Rewinski tallied 3,2,2, respectively.  Chris himself said he missed about 12 bites.  So overall all we scratched and clawed and put a catch together with some absolute beauty Moo Cow Linesiders in the mix as well with two fish breaking the 35lb mark and, by divine intervention a…
