Mon July

Montauk Jumbo Porgies and Knothead Sea Bass Captain Dave reports the best day of the season so far! We had an excellent day of fishing today for both porgies and sea bass. It was mixed in together so we didn’t have to go searching around and spent all day picking away at a nice pile of fish. We saw mostly big fish today and everyone had their limit of both sea bass and porgies! Today’s pool winner was Raymond Brown of Amityville with a nice 3.5lb porgy.

Whale Watching Humpbacks! Bottlenose dolphins! Fin whales! We did it again! We are at 100% success rate so far this season! Today we had reports of fin whales offshore. As we passed the lighthouse we got a report of a whale and dolphins just 3 miles away! We found a humpback whale and about 200 inshore bottlenose dolphins- this was a 30′ humpback feeding and swimming! The dolphins and humpback were probably eating the same thing- sand eels! This juvenile humpback surprised us with a beautiful full body break about 100 feet from us! WOW! We left this humpback to search for the fin whales and found another juvenile humpback. Eventually we got to where we were last week and found a rapidly moving fin whale. We also saw an ocean sunfish and hammerhead shark during this trip. Totals: –…

Montauk Jumbo Summer Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass Captain Dave reports a slower morning of fishing aboard the Viking Starship. There was plenty of action but quite a lot of smaller fish. We gad one really good drift when the tide changed with lots of nice sized porgies and a few sea bass. We also had a handful of keeper flukes. Saylin Mendez from the Bronx was the first place pool winner with a 3lb porgy and second place went to Miguel Cordero from the Bronx with 4.5lb fluke.

Night Striped Bass Capt Carl reports a much tougher night than last night, but we did manage some Bass. The jigging part of the trip was not like the previous night…though there was tons of birds and bait, everything was scattered in a wide area and not concentrated so we only managed a couple of short bass, 1 keeper, some blues, some giant scup, and some sea bass. Once we switched over to the eels, we had to wait for a while until the flood tide started, but once it did, we started to pick away at some bigger Striped Bass. As the current got stronger, we kept picking a couple a drift and put in some extra time to catch as many as we could, but it was nowhere near what we wanted for the capacity crowd. Nick Lazar…
