Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Montauk

Wednesday August 21

2 Day Deep Water Extended Both Days Ultra Limited Captain Steven Sr reports an okay offshore trip this past week. On day 1, Mother Nature did her part by giving us an unpleasant start with steady 20+ mph winds all day, which made it very difficult to tend the bottom. With the big ground swell from the east-wind, we had some tough conditions, but we did manage to make a decent day with some tiles, hake, pollack, a few norther groupers and barrel fish. On day 2, we had the opposite- it was flat and calm, making for good conditions and a much better bite. We had tile fish up to 43lbs, 9 fish over 25lbs, a nice bunch of 8-15lb healthy tiles- overall lots of quality fish! By the end of the trip, everyone was happy with their catch!…

Capt. Ant reports some optimism that this diet the Stripers have been on for the past few days are finally nearing its end.  We still had a slow night as far as what was in the boat but much better than the past two nights and we should have at least doubled our catch between missed bites and lost fish.  We even enticed a couple of Moo Cow Linesiders  to bite as well.  Kevin McCormick from East Islip had the largest going 38.8lbs.  This fish was long and very lean, with a full belly he would have gone 40 easy.  And then there was the story of the night.  Our own Nina Marinova finally came bassing.  After years of doing the Bass brochures, using the best photos for reports, creating and maintaining the Moo Cownter, making sure we have enough…

Sunset Stripers Capt Ant reports two nights in a row of slow fishing on the Sunset Jigging trip.  The bite has been off at the light for the past few days so we gave up on the jigs and tried eeling to entice some fish to bite.  There is so much bait around the lighthouse zone right now that even eels made no difference.  Both Sunday and Monday trips delivered 2 bass each trip with a few blues in the mix.  Could be our August summer doldrums are here, or could be that they are waiting for the moon to start feeding again.  Either way it’s been tough fishing.  Pool winners were:Kathleen Brophy Middletown, NY with a 26lbs Second Place went to Nick Puglisi, Westchester, with a 15lbs Half Day Fluke PM Capt Carl reports a great afternoon on the…

Sunday Aug 18

Half Day Fluke PM The afternoon fishing was on the slow side. Wind and tide made it tough. We managed to scratch together a small catch- a mix of sea bass, porgies ans fluke. Half Day Fluke AM Capt Ant reports a sensational fluke trip and summer bottom fishing trip.  We went where we have been going to start only to find every boat in Montauk combing the bottom.  We picked but not enough so we headed off to a new zone and it certainly paid off.  Large fat fluke, jumbo sea bass and monster porgy’s throughout a very long drift.  We wound up tallying 38 keeper fluke for 34 fares and did the majority in 3 drifts. Full Day Porgies and Sea Bass Fishing was a little slower than it has been due to the strong tides. When the…

Saturday August 17

Half Day Fluke PM We had Terri Coleman from Holbrook NY with a 5.1lber for first place and Angelo Demetroulakous from Brooklyn NY with a 4.5lbs fluke in second place. Full Day Block Island Fluke and Sea Bass Capt Carl reports another solid day fishing for fluke and sea bass in Block Island. In the first minute of the first drift Tasso Tsiatis slammed a doormat fluke over 8lbs. We steadily picked away at quality keeper fluke for the whole morning, many around a little bit here and there. There was some sea bass in the mix as well as giant scup, one striped bass, one blue fish and even one codfish! We did get dogged out of some areas which hurt our sea bass totals but everyone had some. Tommy Alexopolous did work totaling 8 keepers (orl) to…

Block  Island Behemoth Trophy Hunt Captain Ant reports an excellent night at Block, with both quantity and quality.  We actually had our best night of the year for quantity and totaled 5 fish over the 30lb mark.  Two  anglers especially were on fire.  Chris “Cool Hand” Luke had 5 total bass, a 37.2lb pool fish, a 34, a 28 another keeper around 10lbs and a throwback…nothing like getting the smallest and the largest.  Frank “Guiness” Stoutenberg was the first to nail a Behemoth and came in second with a 36.8lb trophy.  Frank also added a 31, and 26lb fish.  Jonny “Jesus of the Elbow” had his limit to 34lbs, Our good old friend Don “Juan” Mitchell nailed a beauty, always silent but deadly with the rod and reel!!!  “The Big Man” Jeff Thompson also had his limit to about 25lbs….

Thursday August 15

Night Striped Bass Capt. Ant reports a frustrating night of Bassing.  15-20kts out of the SW against a strong Ebb…yuck..tough drifting conditions had us drifting backwards in order to keep the lines straight.  The fish were there and stacked and biting, but they were biting tentatively.  I saw 3 fish come up last night just holding the eel tail, never getting the hook, and it wasn’t from swinging early.  You really had to be experienced to catch last night as our regulars, Chris Luke, Doug Seay and Jonny Jesus of the Elbow Rewinski tallied 3,2,2, respectively.  Chris himself said he missed about 12 bites.  So overall all we scratched and clawed and put a catch together with some absolute beauty Moo Cow Linesiders in the mix as well with two fish breaking the 35lb mark and, by divine intervention a…

Wed Aug 14

Half Day Fluke PM Fishing was pretty tough this afternoon. We had wind against tide and the conditions were just too difficult. We managed a handful of keepers. The pool winner was Kenneth Heath from Elkton MD with a 5.75lbs fluke. Second place winner was Kyle Lett from Golden Bridge NY with a 5.1lbs fluke . Half Day Fluke AM Fishing was good this morning, reports Capt Joe from the Viking Starship. We had nice keeper fluke as well as some JUMBO sea bass mixed in. It was also a beautiful day out on the water. Matthew Angellilo from Burlington CT took the pool with a 6.7lb fluke and second place went to Bill Sullivan who had a 5.9lber. Full Day Porgies and Sea Bass Capt Dave reports that the bite was VERY GOOD again today. We lad all…

Tuesday August 13

Half Day Fluke PM Captain Joe reports a difficult afternoon of fishing due to the wind and tide. Besides that and some rain, we did prevail! We ended up with a nice handful of fluke and sea bass. Everyone left happy! Today’s first place pool winner was Yeflier Roolmon of Freeport with a 5.1lb fluke and in second place was Derjia Roolmon also of Freeport with a 4.6lb fluke. Full Day Porgies and Sea Bass Capt Dave reports an excellent day of porgy fishing we had nice size porgies and sea bass everyone had lots of fish to take home. The pool winner was Mr Robert Siepul with a 4.4 porgy Half Day Fluke AM Captain Joe reports a very good morning of fluke fishing! We had some really big keepers all around today. We also had a mix of…

Monday Aug 12

Sunset Stripers Jigging Trip Capt. Ant reports the Sunset Striper Slam on Monday was full of action for the first 2 hours but as the tide slowed o did the catching.  We started bailing blues, our first two drifts producing about 50 of the sabre toothed alligators.  We moved zones and found some beautiful bass and continued to bloody the Viking Star.  Unfortunately that was short lived, but not after Angelo nailed 3 (orl)..man was he on fire.  Jonny “Jesus” of the Elbow” Rewinski brought a couple of disciples who also caught a bass apiece, Jonny however could only manage the choppers.  Overall we had about a third of the boat catch a bass and about 90% catch a blue or 6:)  Great crew, Great Sunset, another great summer night of Viking Fishing! The Pool winner was Jeff Thompson from Elmont,…
