Sun July 30 – Whale Watching
Just gets better and better! On a comfortable day, with unlimited visibility, we were ready to find lots of cetaceans , and that we did. We had reports of dolphins “everywhere,” and whales where we’d seen them on our last, as well as closer to shore. Are assumption that the nearshore whales were juvenile humpbacks was correct. These juvenile humpback whales and dolphins were searching for and feeding on the abundant patches of Atlantic menhaden (AKA bunker). We watched as the whales fed via subsurface lunges. These were small humpbacks, probably no larger than 24 feet. Our first 4 humpbacks undertook no “surface” activity, but our 5th humpback was repeatedly flipper-slapping and surfacing lunging. Beautiful to watch. We’re already looking forward to Wednesday’s trip!! Join us. 300-400 Inshore bottlenose dolphins 6 humpback whales 200 Great shearwaters 10 Cory’s shearwaters…

Sun July 30 – Full Day Block Island Fluke & Sea Bass
Capt J.R reports a more difficult day of fishing today on the Viking Starlite. Today’s Block Island Fluke and SeaBass trip was in a word, tough. We spent a majority of the trip searching our usual hotspots and finding very little…. There was a pretty significant ground swell in addition to some very windy conditions all morning. Whatever it was, it definitely turned the bite way off. We ended the trip finding some SeaBass and Fluke action, a few nice Fluke with some knot heads. But, after some late fishing we headed home to lick our wounds. The Fluke pool winner went to Tayfun Yaizici with a 6 lb Fluke. The SeaBass pool winner went to Sebastian Jasivkiewicz with a 3 1/2 lb SeaBass. We have more Block Island Fluke and SeaBass trips coming up on the following dates: –…
Sun July 30 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass
Capt Dave reports excellent fishing today on the Viking Starship. Conditions today weren’t great but fishing remained very good. We started off the point this morning and fishing was great, with mixed sizes between medium and large and a few jumbos. We worked our way off to the east after loading up and had our pick of SeaBass were were on the smaller side, but we had a few nice ones in the mix. Overall a good day of fishing. We did not have a pool on the boat today, but the largest fish was around 2.8 lbs. We will be sailing tomorrow (Monday, July 31st) on our 5 am Montauk Porgies and SeaBass.

There are also a bunch of Mackerel around. The pool winner was Cornell Armstrong from Teaneck, NJ with a 3 lb Porgy.
