Sunday, July 29, 2018 4 Cetacean Species Day! Well we found them again. Finback whales, minke whales, humpback whales, and short-beaked common dolphins. The whales weren’t particularly “cooperative,” spending long times down feeding near the sea floor, but they are there to feed. We found 5 finback whales including 2 mom/calf pairs, 5 humpbacks, 2 minkes whales, and about 150 dolphins. The dolphin rode our bow wake and rode the bow wakes of some of the fin whales. Birders on board were happy to find loads of pelagic birds too. Striped Bass Capt Carl was at the helm of the Viking Starship tonight and reports a very disappointing struggle on the grounds. We marked plenty of fish all night long, but they seemed to be in lockjaw mode. We only landed 2 keepers for the whole boat. It was extremely frustrating reading them on the machine all night long and they just didn’t want to bite. Sometimes the night after a Full Moon this happens, and unfortunately tonight it was the case. We expect things to pick back up with the amount of fish around by our next trip on Wednesday night. Mike Deyak from Rocky Point, NY took the pool with a 31 pounder, and Madison Kolnsberg from Queens, NY took second with a 12 pounder.
