Viking Fleet Fishing Reports

Montauk

Sun Sept 11 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports a difficult day of fishing today on the Viking Starship due to the strong tide from last nights full moon. We managed to get a decent pick of Porgies and and some nice size SeaBass but had to pick our way through a lot of little ones. We did have two Striped Bass on the boat, but they were over slot limit so we had to through them back. There were  also a handful of keeper Fluke on the boat. The first place pool winner went to Philip Alberto from Queens, NY with a 2.5 lb Porgy. Tomorrow starts our first day of Block Island Jumbo Porgies and Knothead SeaBass. This is a 10 hour trip, leaving at the 5am and returning at 3pm. Reservations can be made online at the vikingfleet.com

Sat Sept 10- Full Moon Striped Bass Fishing

Captain Carl reports a definite improvement on the Night Striped Bass boat tonight! We caught 1 beauty slot sized keeper Bass on the first drift, then the tide really started cranking and the drift was very fast for a little bit but soon it slowed up to the perfect speed and we started picking away…

Sat Sept 10 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports a good day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. The morning started off a bit slow as we struggled to hide from the tide. The full moon tide as running hard and didn’t make for the best conditions, but as the day carried out we started to get a lot of…

Fri Sept 9 – Full Moon Striped Bass

Capt Carl reports that tonight’s Full Moon Striped Bass trip started out with a BANG, however, it was very short lived. Our first 3 drifts produced 3 Slot Size Keeper Bass from 29 inches to 34 1/2 inches, as well as a few small Bluefish. It was a very promising start, however, everything went quiet…

Fri Sept 9 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead SeaBass

Capt Dave reports a great day on the Viking Starship. We got a couple of drifts in at the lighthouse and the Porgy fishing was excellent! We then headed down the beach to get out of the tide and had a steady pick of Porgies. Then we continued and put in a drop east of the lighthouse before we headed to the Sea Bass grounds. Where again we found a lot of smaller fish with everyone getting a few keepers. The pool winner was Joey Falco from Queens, NY with a 2 1/2 lb Porgy.

Mon Sept 5 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Carl reports a fine morning of half day fishing on the Viking Starlite. We caught lots of fish consisting mostly of Large Porgies, Sea Bass, and a few fluke to 7lbs! There was no pool today but everyone went home with fresh fish for dinner! There was no pool held on the boat today.

Mon Sept 5 – Montauk Lighthouse Jumbo Porgies & Knothead Sea Bass

Capt Dave reports a great day of fishing today on the Viking Starship. We had a relatively light crowd this Labor Day which made for a great day to do some exploring and it was a Porgy “Bail Job”. We started off the morning anchored up on a nice rock pile east of the Lighthouse…

Sun Sept 4- Whale Watching

Another stellar trip with 5 humpback whales!!   This incredible season continues! We didn’t have to travel far from Montauk Lighthouse to find our first humpback.  This was Scylla’s 2016 calf again. The propeller scars and damaged dorsal are hard to look at, but the resilience of this animal is a testament to its will to survive. This 6 year old whale is just almost 40 feet (12.2m) long, and was feeding on the bottom periodically and after a while came to the surface and first, we saw a massive “tail-throw,” followed by multiple bouts of pectoral flipper-slapping, and rolling over, sometimes right next to us on the starboard side (our engines were out of gear, of course) and right under our bow.  Just amazing. A small private boat was nearby and appropriately remained motionless as this whale swam and…

Sun Sept 4 – 1/2 Fishing PM

Capt Carl reports more of the same rod bending action this afternoon with giant Porgies, Sea Bass, a few fluke, and numerous other species keeping our anglers busy all afternoon. Again, everyone went home with plenty of filets for dinner! The first place pool winner went to Malone Smith from East Quogue, NY with a 3.8 lb Sea Bass. The second place pool winner went Reese Smith from East Quogue as well with a 3.2 lb SeaBass. We did cancel the PM portion of tomorrows half day fishing (Monday September 5th) but we will be sailing for the 8 AM portion of the trip.

Sun Sept 4 – 1/2 Day Fishing AM

Capt Carl reports an action packed BONANZA on the morning half day trip! Ross were bending all morning all around the boat with loads of Porgies, Sea Bass, Mackerel, and a few fluke sprinkled in as well. Everyone went home with some delicious fresh fish for dinner and memories to last a lifetime!  The first…
